Advertising on Eggs
EggFusion uses lasers to print advertisements on eggs. The company’s eggs have found their way into millions of kitchens – including my own. They’ve left their mark on more than 200 millions eggs – and that’s just scratching the surface of the potential market; 50 billion eggs are sold and distributed in the U.S. each year.
EggFusion’s lasers penetrate to approximately 5% of the thickness of the egg’s shell – causing an ink-like appearance but leaving the outer surface intact. The advertisements are etched during the egg grading process – the technology is such that no slow down in the “grading lane” is necessary. EggFusion’s lasers can etch an egg moving at almost four feet per second.
As an aspiring entrepreneur – this product strikes me as ingenious. EggFusion has a captive audience in a highly sought after demographic, a blank slate and free distribution. By attaching a value-add, an easy-to-read expiration date, the company hopes to calm potential critics. EggFusion claims that nine out of ten consumers find the expiration information to be a new valuable service.
The company is targeting middle-class mothers aged 22 - 54. EggFusion has already attracted the likes of CBS who was shameless when it came to the corny jokes – 35 million of which were cracked this Fall.

A Cure for Ad Blindness
In the information age, with the glut of advertising we’re regularly exposed to, consumers have become adept at filtering out advertisements. EggFusion has novelty working in their favor. I find myself paying attention to what’s written on the EggFusion’s egg - more so because I have to handle and crack it. How long this effect will last is hard to say.
It might not be long before we start seeing ads in other novel places. Toilet paper comes to mind. Toilet humor too, which I’m okay with.
