I'm leaving you, Alcove Cafe. I know, I know, I've said it before, but this time it's for real. Yes, you have a beautiful patio, with corners tucked away from traffic. And, you're right, I really do like your lamb burger. But that's not enough this time, nosiree.

I don't remember ever really complaining about the heat waves in Los Angeles. Our family always had to "make do" with the heat and what we had. If it meant fresca popsicles from our local Carniceria, I was happy. Other times my mom would just throw us in

My friends Greg and Sara were in town from Austin this past weekend so I thought I'd start with a summary of all the great places we ate starting with Friday. We were all starving by the time they made it to my house from LAX that afternoon so we headed over to Hillhurst Ave. I had the crab cake sandwich per usual even though I find there to be too much bun and not enough crab cake. Sara had the brie and apple panini which she loved. I can't remember what Greg had but they loved everything and it was great to sit outside in the shade and enjoy a beautiful Southern California afternoon.

Around town these days it seems that every restaurant must have a bakery case and coffee bar, like soy must have its cheese. It's what modern life has become - having options within an arm's reach. Whether pastries are baked in-house, beans roasted on-site, or perhaps the goods come from an outside bakery, most patrons don't really care whose kitchen it was made in as long as they can have their cake and eat it too.

We came here after checking out a condo nearby (only few blocks away). Their menu seems to be same at night (old entries here & here. Both so-so.

Brunch at Alcove (see old entry). Cobb Omelette (bacon, avacado, blue cheese) was huge and heavy. The Spinach Egg Puff with Cheese was so-so, the puff too soggy and cheese layer a bit too rubbery texture for my liking. Unlike that red velvet cake last time, the St. Honore cake was fantastic! It was marron & egg custard. They're redeemed in their pastry department in my eyes ^^;;

Found a very adorable place in Los Feliz! You line up to order food indoor first (love the interior~~) and they'll bring the food to you. There's a big courtyard and garden surrounding the cafe with tables, very cozy! There's a gourmet market on the other side that sells Euro import groceries and cheese, and there's a wine shop in the back. I've gone back to this place 3 times already :).

I'm a bad sick person when it comes to staying home and convelescing. Nor am I compliant with strictly adhering to the sick person's diet. Still I tried and partially stuck to plan, downing the serviceable lentil soup yesterday at Alcove (Los Feliz's answer to Urth Cafe, minus the smarmy guys scratching their bellies with BMW keys as Matthew has so keenly observed). I cursed the $6 Elixir tonic which, in a fit of inspired parsimony, I managed to get more mileage out of by diluting with hot water at home.

Nice neighborhood joint. Too bad we just moved -- Alcove would have been a quick walk. It's a very casual way to spend your breakfast. And the adjoining shop boasts a wide variety of cheeses, and plenty of take home fare, every thing from potato salad to
