Don't you hate waiting in line for breakfast? Most weekend eateries open by 10 am but that hangover keeps you in bed ‘til 11 am. And of course by then the line for a table is out the door. Joan's on Third is a little different; they take your order at the counter so all you need to do is search for a table... and believe me, it won't take an hour... ten minutes tops. I stumbled upon the deli/bakery a month ago along Third street near the Beverly Center. New York’s Dean & Deluca comes to mind when you enter their newly-renovated store: glass displays, white tiles and countertops overflowing with everything from roasted nut...

It's amazing that Joan's on Third was able to continue service in their old space during expansion construction. The service counter has doubled in size (that's the old counter in the back of the picture), as the western wall was removed making a large U in the center of the clean, white space. Separately standing in the northwest corner is the dessert counter featuring gelato, cupcakes and Joan's other notable sweets. The cheese counter has expanded and continues to be helmed by Marty the Cheenius (that's a terrible pun for 'cheese genius'). Expounding more facts than wikipedia (and certainly more trustworthy), Marty offered slice after...

Painfully trendy spots where you go to see and be seen - it's just not my thing. Why dress up to go to a deli? I need to wear HEELS to a diner? Oh, but it's TRENDY? Heck no. Not the route I like. I'll dress up for a fancy 5 course dinner, that's just respectful. But these places that traditionally have a laid

I don't fall easily. Some might say I'm picky, but really I just have high standards. When it comes to chocolate, I have a few requirements, and if they're not there, the relationship just isn't fullfilling. Why settle, right? So what do I look for in an ideal chocolate? First of all, make it dark. Milk chocolate is sweet and friendly, but there is something about dark chocolate that really makes my knees weak. Slightly bitter, definitely complicated, it leaves you wanting more. Secondly, it has to be fudgy. I like my chocolate rich and dense (hopefully Chocolate Mr. Right's human counterpart will have at most one of these traits). So, I can go for a congenial coffee with a polite piece of chocolate bundt cake, but leave me with a flourless chocolate cake, and I will devour it.

Little in my daily life resembles stereotypical Hollywood fantasies--neither J or I or any of our friends work in the industry, we live far from the beach, I usually take the -gasp- bus to work, I've never set foot in a celebrity-owned eating establishment. Every once in awhile, however, I'll have a moment where it hits me like a ton of bricks--Holy Sh*t, I live in Los Angeles. The first such moment came not long after we'd moved here and I'd started my job. I attended a memorial service for the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, and unwittingly sat down next to Warren Beatty and Annette Benning, both of whom made small talk with me until the event started, which was of course, emceed by Josh Lyman..um..wait..Bradley Whitford. It took quite an effort to wrap my mind around the fact this was an event I was attending for work.

But it's not over until our family has our fill on deliciously sweet desserts. Part one was a generous slice of rich yet heavenly light Strawberry Cheesecake from our neighborhood deli and restaurant, Junior's. Pre-ordered, we usually get two or three of these babies - One for us and two for extended family.

Last Saturday I drove to a quaint little deli/restaurant in LA on Third Street to meet MM for a late lunch and some dessert. I had half of her BLT which was amazingly delicious. Didn't think you could make a BLT better than the ones Mom used to make, but Joan's sandwich was pretty close. The bacon was meaty and crisp, just the way I like it. Although I wanted to sample every dessert at Joan's - from the chocolate frosted chocolate cupcake that the little boy at the next table was eating to the creme filled chocolate cupcake on display behind the counter - I decided to go with the below cake with berries. The name escapes me, but this dessert definitely hit the spot!

Back to Joan's on 3rd, the gourmet marketplace with lots of specialty groceries and gorumet food, wine and cheese. I had an really old entry here before about their really delicious peach gummies. There's a cafe where you can order food as well, though it can get too crowded since it's such a popular spot. Venetian Coppa Salame with provolone & olive paste, $9.95. Baby Field Greens with goat cheese, spiced pecans and joan's vinaigrette, $5.50. Not mine. I had a bite though and it's good!

Joan's on Third is this little yummy deli+gourmet marketplace+cafe on West Hollywood. I first heard of it when a co-worker gave me the BEST gummy I've ever tasted in my life! So we went there just for the gummies (peach flavor only). The little space is packed with rare cheese, wine, jams, olives, European yoguart and candies. The atmosphere is very casual hollywood, I wish I can have lunch there everyday~ ^_^
