Dinner & a Movie at the Kabuki

I'm very Jewish when it comes to Christmas because you'll typically find me at the movies. As a single guy living away from my family, I often find myself sharing my Christmas with other strangers in a dark room and the flickering light on the projected silver screen. This year, I decided to check out the new Sundance Kabuki Cinemas on Christmas Eve. The Kabuki Cinemas in San Francisco's Japantown recently went through a renovation, now under the ownership of Robert Redford's Sundance Group. Things are seriously ticking in the Fillmore. Opening this Friday is the ~SUNDANCE CINEMAS KABUKI~ in Japantown. The multi-level project will include a cheese and wine bar, with a wine list from Courtney Cochran of Hip Tastes. Cochran tells me indie films inspired the 100-strong selections: they’re small production, handmade wines with a dash of flair (you know, a little quirk, like an indie flick!). There will be an adventurous list of 25 wines available by the glass at the wine bar (which you can take into the theaters), and all 100 selections will be offered in the 130-seat restaurant next door, Kabuki Kitchen. Kabuki at Howard Hughes

My mom danced odori for most of her adolescent and young adult years. She danced in the parades of Disneyland, in New Orleans, at Disney World in Florida, and so many places I have yet to visit. But when I was just a little girl, my mom tried to get me to love dancing just as much as she did. She took me to the same dancing studio she went to many years, with Madame Fujima Kansuma. But instead of loving the discipline and the structured steps, I wanted to dance footloose, kick off my Sunday shoes...Ooowhee! I was a rambunctious little four year old, and didn't want anything to stop me from playing on the monkey bars, drawing outside the lines with my unsharpened Crayolas, and making brownies and cakes in my Easy Bake Oven. And after a few lessons, I was never to donn the traditional zoris for dancing ever again. FULL REVIEW
