I have been hearing of M Cafe de Chaya for a couple years now, and finally made it out there for lunch last week. I loved it. A part of the Chaya Venice/Brasserie group, this is their macrobiotic outpost. Macrobiotics is a diet consisting of whole, natural, seasonal foods. No refined sugar, dairy or meat. Seafood is the only animal protein in the diet. At the cafe, you may dine in, or take out. They have some covered outdoor seating, and a few tables inside, including a communal table. They have a large deli case filled with various salads, sushi (made with brown rice) and pastries (made with natural grain sweeteners). I ordered their...

I can’t do raw, but maybe I could go macro.
Great thing about the macrobiotic diet — not only does the food come cooked, the diet also includes fish. M Cafe de Chaya serves a juicy grilled tuna burger, I found out about a week ago.
Besides the grilled fish and sushi, the macro diet’s pretty much [...]

Pumpkin Risotto, Halloween's over, Autumn is ending soon (but it's still hot like summer here), and pumpkin is still at large. This is incredibly delicious, I savored every bite, so good~ This microbiotic restaurant/deli is one of the most blogged places on my blog, but I still haven't tried their bento box yet (they looked great).

I don't know why i tend to love, love, love health food! I seriously prefer the taste of veggies to meat, fruit sweetener to sugar and whole grain instead of enriched, well at least most of the time. With Real Food Daily and Oreans Health Express already

Mommy, what's macrobiotic? It sounds like a disease, or perhaps, the medicine used to treat a disease, but macrobiotic is defined simply as "The theory or practice of promoting well-being and longevity, principally by means of a diet consisting chiefly of whole grains and beans."

A casual member of the Chaya restaurant family, M Cafe de Chaya blends California food sensibilities with the kind of quick-serve gourmet eatery (think Dean and Deluca) that you'd find in New York. I'm a huge fan of this place.

Although this Japanese-fusion Macrobiotic place is Joan's frequent workday lunch spot, this is my first time. :D Even though it was weekend but I met Joan's IF co-workers there~ (so it IS their favorite eatery).

Back to M Chaya again with co-workers. Lots of people raved about their Club Sandwich so I gave it try even though it's got fake bacon. It's good but doesn't really live up to the hype, i.e. I would rather get something else next time. I forgot what that salad is, my co-worker got the (fake) fried pork rice bowl. I didn't taste it but doesn't look that good ^^;;;

Little in my daily life resembles stereotypical Hollywood fantasies--neither J or I or any of our friends work in the industry, we live far from the beach, I usually take the -gasp- bus to work, I've never set foot in a celebrity-owned eating establishment. Every once in awhile, however, I'll have a moment where it hits me like a ton of bricks--Holy Sh*t, I live in Los Angeles. The first such moment came not long after we'd moved here and I'd started my job. I attended a memorial service for the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, and unwittingly sat down next to Warren Beatty and Annette Benning, both of whom made small talk with me until the event started, which was of course, emceed by Josh Lyman..um..wait..Bradley Whitford. It took quite an effort to wrap my mind around the fact this was an event I was attending for work.

A little break from NY and back to LA from Joan. So I didn't have a good impression on this place last time, but I promised to give it another try because so many people raved about it (it became a once-a-week-eat out place for a lot of co-workers). This time I stick with their salad and fish (which is the only real meat they serve). Tuna Tataki Salad. Oh my it taste so great! The fish and vegetable all taste incredibly fresh and I love the sauce. Stan got the Tuna Burger and he said it's probably the best burger he has ever had. As I learned my lesson from last time, I stick with the standard chocolate flavor and got the Chocolate pear mousse cake. I like it a lot too, the mousse texture almost taste like tofu pudding, the sweetness is subtle since they don't use sugar. A very smily Kristin Dunst and her gal pal were sitting next to us! :D

A friend took me to this fancy deli place and said it was good. The designy interior and the delicate prepared food displayed behind the deli glass window made the place seem really promising! Plus it's supposedly opened by Gwyneth Paltrow's former personal chef blah blah...not that I care about the "Celeb" factor but it sounds like the food can't be that bad right? WRONG. I got the Carolina-style Barbequed sandwich and my friend got the Panino Tuscano (forgot to take pix). My gosh both were HORRIBLE! I wasn't aware that this is a "veggie" place, I thought it's just supposedly to be healthy and organic? The fake meat were just too yucky, and the sauce was not good either. The side was Moroccan salad and it was hard and not fresh. My friend also got a squash soup and it tasted bad as well (no squash taste, too salty). If I had known that this is a vegetarian place I would just stick to their salad which is probably good. My friend couldn't even finish his sandwich and proposed us to have a 2nd lunch somewhere else ^^;;; I got a sesame dome which I hope could redeem this lunch, urrgghhh it tasted so gross! No sesame flavor whatsoever, in fact it had NO taste! I wish I got the more normal dessert (i.e. raspberry chocolate cake) instead which probably can't go wrong (errr...I hope). Apparently all the desserts in this place is "no egg, diary or refined cane sugar"...to make this experience worst, the food is pricey. The sandwiches were $11 each, desert was $6....urggh, will never go back.

If there's one thing that bugs me, it's a restaurant that doesn't have its concept figured out -- the menu lacks focus, the servers are out to lunch when you want to be at lunch, etc. So I'm happy to report that M Cafe on Melrose has its concept down to a science that should probably be replicated in health-conscious upscale enclaves across the country. I'm sure it helps that the cafe is owned by the proprietors of the Chaya restaurants, who must be doing something right to have lasted so long in this fickle town.
