Malo's Matthew Dickson updated Eating L.A. on a few recent developments...a new chef, Eric Ritter, has arrived although the menu won't be changing, "just the quality," says Dickson who promises that Ritter, lately of San Francisco's Ponzu, learned Mexican cooking at his mother's knee and speaks fluent Spanish.
Also new at Malo is a 100% organic margarita, because if you're going to get trashed,

I was prepared to hate Malo. All 'Hounds were, after hearing recent reviews of how terrible the service was or how inauthetic the cuisine was and all sorts of other stuff. At the end of the day, there I was, four margraritas ahead of everyone else, and I didn't give a fuck. Take your poor service and your inauthentic Mexican, and you know what, I had a great fucking time.

Today Malo came up in discussion. It means bad in Spanish because it is. Plain and simple. Although it's one of the few hipster Mexican restaurants in Silverlake/Los Feliz, it's just over priced, over hyped food. For drinks it's fine- a margarita, Dos Equis, tequila. But stale chips, weak salsa, bland entrees... I'll take El Carmen or El Compadre over Malo. I just have to put it out there because so many people love it. And with places like La Parilla, El Parian and Chichen Itza so close, it's a shame that so many favor Malo.

Malo (An improvised Cinco De Mayo meal or East Side Love is Living on the West End)
Lately I've been finding myself working much harder and getting up much earlier on the weekend. A deadly combination for a musician. I would say roughly that my weekends have consisted of me getting up at around 5AM... sigh. Shockingly though it has been to get to gigs, so I should never complain. Though a musician may have to work odd hours, he still can be successful as long as he is happy at what he's doing. I'm happy... most of the time. What's more important is that even when...

As I left work the other day, I noticed a gull taking a bath in a fountain. I cautiously crept forward to get a closer look and noticed that I was being spied as well. My seemingly newfound friend was eyeing me carefully, and took to flight when I got too close. But before he flew away, I snapped this photo.

I like Malo despite it's many flaws. He's rather like the super good friend you have that's always flubbing meet-up times and inserting foot-in-mouth, but you see his goodness, so all is forgiven. Actually, wait, no - Malo is like that friend that screws

Had some drinks and food after work with a couple of co-workers. We went to Malo, a hip hang out place offers "creative" Mexican food. They used to have this Chocolate salsa sauce that tasted good and different, but seems like I'm among the few people who like it as it's off from the menu. -__- We got the Tomatillo & Hass Avocados and Burnt Habanero and creme fraiche sauces for chips. I love the Habanero sauce very much and can't stop eating it, even though it gets spicy. Most of us got the Ground beef, potato and pickle tacos because one of the guys keep raving about it. It's pretty good but I wish there were more pickles. The Slow Roasted Carnitas Cola & Orange Juice is delicious! Can't really taste the coke nor orange juice flavor though ^^;;
