It was one of the longest trips I have ever taken for a meal. One hour-long taxi ride, one delayed five-and-a-half hour flight, and one excruciatingly slow encounter with a Cheech lookalike rental car attendant at LAX later, I was finally on the road in LA. The sun was setting. I hadn't eaten since JFK. After a harrowing trip up the 405, I finally reached my destination, a restaurant heretofore unknown. This. My first thought was: WTF? A ten-hour trip for this? Some LA Chowhounders had tipped me off to Monte Alban. Maybe they were smoking crack. Supposedly this exterior in a strip mall hid some of the best Oaxacan-style Mexican in all...

Visiting a customer on the Westside is such a treat for me because I so often have to delve south toward environs like Torrance, Irvine or even San Diego. But my afternoon meeting was held in Westwood, which means that I had the chance to finally check out the other major stop on the Oaxacan restaurant tour, Monte Alban. I didn't know what to expect, and I had no pre-determined items that I would seek out. All I knew is that I would eat mole, and that I would stay away from ordering a big-ass clayuda.

Monte Alban is another Oaxacan restaurant on the Westside, many foodies argued it being better than Guelaguetza Palms Restaurant (or not as good). So I ordered their most basic dish. Their mole is very chocolatety and very sweet...in fact a bit TOO sweet. But it's still very yummy, but I'd have enjoyed it more if it were chicken back/thign instead of chicken breast. Mole really haunts me, I often thought about the flavor and aroma, trying to grasp and dissect that taste in my head. ^^;;; I think their menu is generally smaller than Guel but features more seafood dishes. The interior is surprisingly spacious (since it locates inside a small strip mall). I can't wait to go back to try their more complicated dishes.

Now that I've been living in Los Angeles for a while, I've started wondering why it's taken me so long to dive into the Mexican food scene. For christ's sake, I speak Spanish. I can comfortably pronounce everything on any menu. I love tortas de pollo and I've only eaten one the entire time I've lived here.
