Baco vs. Sope at Opus and La Cabanita

On Tuesday nights, Opus serves bacos (bread + taco, I believe). They're large grilled flatbreads, $8 each, and topped with your choice of: pork belly and short rib carnitas with salbixtada; market fish with pickled red cabbage and garlic-chive dressing; spiced tofu baco with napa cabbage salad and avocado; or pork meatball and chorizo baco with caraway-pepper sauce and smoked jalapeno. Every night of the week, La Cabanita in Montrose serves a special sope (fried, thick corn flour disc) dish--you get three sopes, one with sweet spiced ground beef, one with chicken and one with pork. High point It's so much better than it has to be. There's dips of smoked tomatillo-coriander or yogurt with sumac and wild thyme, spaetzle with braised oxtail and a respectable scallop ceviche. Chef Josef Centeno (formerly of Meson G) used to make flatbreads for his staff, topping them with pulled pork or baja-style fish and cabbage; now they're on the menu. Rarely does attentive service, delicious, creative food, reasonable prices, and a beautiful space converge as they do at Opus. J and I felt like VIPs during our recent dinner at this restaurant near the corner of Wilshire and Western, and it wasn't because we were throwing $100 bills around or have any particular claims to fame.
