Besides the fact that it's been used to simply describe LA's Philippe's, it also reminds me of being crazy. What makes this interesting though is I would say that you'd be crazy to NOT go here... religiously. Now on the other hand, once you've had one of their French Dip sandwiches(of which they are noted as being the arguable creators of), you can realize what addiction is about on a small level cause it causes cravings which can be maddening. It's located about a city block away from Union Station, residing there since 1908. It has...

I used to think that L.A. is a far and distant land. A visit to this enchanted place of swanky, buzzed-about eateries, and age old landmarks required a lot of effort, particularly with the driving. First, there's the 5 freeway to contend with, especially that section around La Mirada, which moves slower than molasses. Second is trying to find parking without paying a fortune. And third, the gas, which now tops out $3.50 per gallon in my 'hood. But a few Saturdays ago (May 12th, to be exact) we decided that there's a solution. We don't have to gas-up, drive to or park in L.A. to enjoy it! And it was right there under our noses all...

A historic landmark in LA, deli Philippe's has been serving the original ""French Dipped Sandwich" since it was established in 1908 (next year it'll be 100 years!). Located at the edge of Chinatown, Philippe's is a crowded spot, as you can see in the picture. It's got a huge cafeteria-like space with long communal tables. The sawdust on the floor is totally old style.

Subway or Lee's sandwiches aren't in my rotation of good eats so I generally pass on eating sandwiches when given a choice. But there's something about Philippe's French Dipped Sandwiches, that I just can't get enough of. They're moist with au jus soaked buns, savory with fresh and tender cuts of meat, and go so well with an ice cold glass of lemonade and bag of crunchy barbecue flavor Lay's potato chips.

I've been craving a decent french dip sandwich for awhile. And not any old french dip sandwich (french dip from IHOP is not my idea of fufilling a sandwich craving...much less any kind of craving for anything edible) - something transcendent, something life-changing - well okay, I can just settle for something filling and delicious. Philippe's fills that need nicely.

Philippe should really be named the Philippe the Copy Cat. I believe Coles invented the French Dip sandwich and Coles serves a much better French Dip sandwich.

Either They're At Phillipe's Or They're Handing Out Free Money Somewhere...They Must Be Handing Out Free Money Somewhere.
Crawling southbound on the Hollywood Freeway at a little over 15 mph, it suddenly hit me that it's open season for tourists in Los Angeles. The cars entering and exiting the Lankershim and Highland exits are backed up all the way to what seems like Ventura County, carrying people who have come from all corners of the world to get the ultimate LA experience: Universal City, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, maps to stars' homes. Recently, its been unusually busy--the traffic has not eased up even after this busy area and has remained stop and go all the way to downtown, adding at least 20-30 minutes daily to my late-afternoon commute. Traffic has even gotten worse on weekends. So where on earth is everyone going?

As Philadephia has its cheesesteak rivalries, Los Angeles has its French dip wars. Philippe’s the Original opened its doors near downtown Los Angeles in 1908 and looks every year of it. It’s among LA’s oldest restaurants and disputably claims to have invented the French dip sandwich. A mile away, the equally old Cole’s P.E. Buffet also lays claim to its invention.

Can't believe we've never done a Rate-A-Restaurant on Philippe's, so consider this long over due. Maria and I were downtown to stop by Claude's birthday party in his new digs at the Gas Company Lofts. Cool place, great views... and plenty of great food ch
