Just about every time I'm winding my way over the hill into Hollywood I pass by Solar de Cahuenga at the corner of Franklin and Cahuenga and think, "Man, I need to check this place out." Back when I lived just a hop, skip, and a jump (aka three blocks) from the cafe's corner there was no cafe there to speak of. Then again, there was no such thing as WiFi to speak of, so part of the restaurant's draw was as yet to be created. But that was then, and this is now.
Anyhow. After ages of forgetting to check it out (and only remembering when I was already headed somewhere else) I made a point to make it there for a casual weekend brunch...

The past 2 times I came here for lunch I kept leaving behind my camera charging at the office. 3rd time is the charm! It's a crepe (not so common in the Hollywood area) + coffeeshop, the inside is surprisingly big and cozy. Susie's own: tomato sauce minced meat, nutmeg and spinach (not much flavor). The side was Squash soup. Beef stroganoff crepe: the meat is rubbery and a bit hard to chew, the buttery sauce is good though. I prefer the savory Bell peppers crepe (forgot name) I got last time more. I've also tried their dessert crepes Suzette last time and it's totally forgettable, it kill my further desire to try their other ones. Overall the food is good and not fantastic. Their crepe is a bit too thick for my liking. Though I don't mind coming back here if I ever need a crepe-fix on a work day since it's close by. The nice spacious interior is pretty good for spending hours typing away on laptop or reading. It's also an alternative late night dining on the Franklin Ave area.

Matthias said it was a great place for crepes. He had been there once for a breakfast business meeting and came home mentioning his approval of the meal he just had, actually I think his exact words were, "their crepes are really good." You see, Matthias doesn't get excited about food like I do, unless it's tom kha kai, then he gets really excited and actually goes to the Thai grocer with me to fetch the ingredients. So, when he mentions two sentences worth of good praise about a restaurant then I know he was really impressed. Therefore, his mention of Solar de Cahuenga was enough to whet my appetite and kept me thinking every weekend about having one of their mouthwatering crepes from that extensive menu I've heard about until I finally put myself out of my own misery and tried it once and for all!

Stopped at this newish spot in Hollywood for breakfast Friday morning. Nice space, with a comfy-looking patio, though suffers the fate that many patios in LA do--open to a busy, speeding car-filled street--though most Angelenos don't seem to mind. According to Gayot, on the weekend's it'll be open 24 hours--If true, always nice to add another option to the late-night dining list in close proximity to home.
