Yep, cell phone. We forgot the camera. Here we have a review of brunch at Hungry Cat, provided by guest blogger/erstwhile Knife partner D.R. Stewart. He was only too happy to help. Dana suggested brunch at The Hungry Cat. I said something about fish heads on toast. Get past thinking that seafood and early-morning weekend stomachs do not mix and you find that Hungry Cat doesn’t miss. From my lobster roll to her oyster po’ boy (and blueberry muffins with...

Not wanting to spend a debaucherous evening for New Years Eve, I decided on a nice early dinner at The Hungry Cat, fresh off their new expansion. Hollywood has been quite a zoo lately, and I just wanted burrow under a rock and partake of the new raw bar. With a glass of bubbly and sea urchin in front of me, I lazily greeted the new year, not with a shot, but a sip.

Stopped by the Hungry Cat last night before they close for the next month for renovations that will expand the restaurant size considerably, also adding a raw bar. This was my first time here and the experience was great. I can’t wait to see what they do with the [...]

Crabchella At The Hungry Cat's 3rd Annual Crab Fest
Traffic in Hollywood was a complete mess on Sunday. Yes, most of the traffic was caused by the Immigration March & Rally in Hollywood, but I'm convinced that the arrival of 600 pounds of Maryland Blue Crabs at the Hungry Cat didn't help any. As thousands of civil rights protestors marched the streets in Hollywood, hundreds of selfish eaters poured into The Hungry Cat for their annual Crab Fest. Our party arrived half and hour early and we were quickly seated outside. Unfortunately, all of us were too excited for the crab and too in awe of the complete Crab Fest makeover. With the blaring rock music and charcoal grills, we forgot that...

Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride. Nobody gonna slow me down. Oh no. I got to keep on crabbing. Despite the well-founded worries of the immigration rally cramping the style of The Hungry Cat during its annual crab fest, diners that were present were treated to bushels upon bushels of blue crab. And in an homage to my favorite sports writer, Bill Simmons, here's my running diary:
11:50am - I arrive at Hungry Cat and see the crowd milling about waiting for the restaurant to open. Helicopters were buzzing overhead, presumably news choppers covering the rally on nearby Hollywood Blvd. I got up late after spending the evening in...

My friend Lisa was in town, and was game to try anything. I wanted to try something new, plus run an errand in Hollywood. The Hungry Cat was fine -- as long as Lisa, who's about 7 months pregnant, didn't eat anything raw. They stipulated: But you better like seafood; other than a burger on the menu, it's all from the sea or from a shell next to the water. What we ordered: Starters: 1/2 lb....

A cluttered stretch of Sunset Boulevard, crowded with stores and neon, billboards and cars, the sidewalks studded with gum, marked with the spray-painted symbols of different bands who’ve played Amoeba, seems a place ill suited to the food of a blue New England day, a little warm with a nice breeze, the air has that sweet salt tang to it. But to find the best seafood in town, Los Angelenos know better than to head for the coast, where Neptune’s Net and Gladstone’s do a tolerable job serving tourists. You head east – to the place where it all started. No, not Plymouth, MA. Hollywood.
Hungry Cat, you say, isn’t that a little old hat?...

On Day 2 of LA trip, it was decided that we would go to the Hungry Cat. Its specialty? Chesapeake-style seafood. In Los Angeles. I'm originally from Maryland. Whenever I go back to Baltimore, people there want to take me to someplace that is "really New York." Here I was all the way across the country, and my friends wanted to take me to someplace with an East Coast seafood. There must be some universal human instinct to offer up your city's own "authentic" food from the diner's home state. I was reminded of Pete Wells' entry in Diner's Journal. When he offered to take a Texan to an NYC barbecue place, the Texan threatened to take him...

It's been awhile since I dine at a more chichi gourmet restaurant. A friend whom I haven't seen for a long time came back to freelance at IF so I took her to The Hungry Cat that's near the office. I blog about this place before. The general consensus is that the food is great but overpriced. Salmon salad Sandwich, a bit light tasting. Still good but not amazing...definitely not $14 amazing. I got the Lobster frittata, very delicious! There are lots of big pieces of Lobster so $16 is not too bad. Fresh raw Oyster, it's $2 a piece so we limited ourselves to 2 per person ^^;; The smaller one (Kumamoto) is better, more sweet and crisp.

A review of The Hungry Cat would be the perfect place for me to post gratuitous photos of my kitten children, but today, I will spare you. Here's a photo of the Hungry Cat mascots instead (pssst... they're open for lunch!)

We've been looking forward to try this place for awhile. It's from the same owner of A.O.C.. They open for lunch recently and Michelle treated couple of us (from the job-from-nightmare team). Fish Tacos, special of the day. the PUG burger-bacon, avocado and blue cheese.

These places aren't exactly unknowns, but thought I'd quickly mention my recent experiences at each. As the title indicates, both provide something fairly rare in LA--a place to get a bite that's not only open late, but still bustling at 10:30 p.m.

The Hungry Cat is a cute seafood place with a distinguished pedigree and some knockout cocktails. But its odd location and design make it somewhat hard to appreciate the kind of experience that's likely to cost upwards of $70 for two people. The Cat is the lovekitten of chefs Suzanne Goin (Lucques, AOC) and David Lentz (formerly of Opaline), and it's kind of like a seafood shack on the New England coast put on a shiny little black dress and decided to hide out in a Hollywood shopping complex.

It's a good thing when a place that you're so excited about opens in the general vicinity of your home or office. You just have to hope it a) doesn't catch on with too many folks, b) go downhill, or c) that you burn out. The latter definitely happened when we frequented Blair's in the beginning (but I think I'm ready to go back soon). I'm trying to keep all this in mind now that the Hungry Cat is around.

I exaggerate slightly. Still, sobering up over terrific food at the Hungry Cat counter last night made bar hopping in Hollywood just that much better.
