Mini Foodventure #56: Violet & Air Conditioned (Santa Monica)

This past weekend we celebrated my friend's birthday by going to Violet, a neat little spot on east end of Santa Monica that I've been to before and have been jones-ing to return ever since I got a press release on their re-design about a month back. Anticipating the dim lighting of Violet past, I didn't bring my camera; that turned out to be a mistake since the new ambience had pretty good natural soft-white lighting. Also worth mentioning is lots of wonderful artwork hung around the dining floor, including one wall that splashed across with brilliant swirls of blues, grays and greens -- the ocean, I presume, in its more pristine, less... Violet...just tell me what to eat

Let's get right to the point by saying next time you don't know what to do on a Sunday night for a meal just go To Violet. Chef/Owner Jeff Simons does pre fixe menus on Sunday night's that are wonderful and their daily menu has what you need for a power lunch or even a cozy date. This last time through on Sunday was a dynamite night of refreshing flavors and simple, well done up plates. The truly compelling thing about their pre fixe menu is the price. A three course meal for $25 or $35 if you add the bottomless... FULL REVIEW

Violet

Last month I went to a birthday party at Violet in Santa Monica. Chef Jared Simons is a friend of the birthday girl and offered a varied tasting menu including baked macaroni (Serrano ham, leeks, gruyere cheese), carrot soup with scallops, tuna tartare, creamy risotto and mini root beer floats (amongst other items). The wine flowed endlessly and the food was excellent. FULL REVIEW

I've only discovered Violet about half a year ago, and while our relationship hasn't been smooth sailing all the way -- I keep finding myself returning to this place, particularly if I'm looking for good contemporary food on the cheap. And this time is no FULL REVIEW
