Ahhh, Ramen. There's hardly anything else that would hit the spot like a nice bowl of ramen would. But what if you can't make it all the way to Daikokuya? Much less Asa or Santouka? What if the best you can do that night is Sawtelle? Well, Chabuya was the obvious option in my mind. I'm a sucker for miso, so of course I ordered the miso ramen with pork. I also added an egg (+$1). Pretty good, pretty good. I like the addition of sesame seeds and fried shallots. The soup is not nearly Daikokuya-level. It's not bad and is actually pretty flavorful and rich, but somehow ... rather boring. I agree with rameniac's contention that Chabuya's soup... FULL REVIEW

Too short to be a substantial blog entry (asides from an excuse to dish out food photos), yet too long for my Twitter -- that's what my Friday Quickies will be for: brief moments of tastings, observances and other food-related thoughts I've made over this past week. Chabuya Tokyo Noodle Bar: Finally had a chance to check out Chabuya on the little tokyo strip of Sawtelle. The shrimp shumai ($4.50 for four) were definitely a rip -- it was soggy, pretty bland and I honestly think it came from a frozen package where $4.50 can buy two dozen of those. Chabuya - Tokyo Noodle Bar

On Sunday, there was nothing but brown paper and a sign in the window saying that Hanoi Cafe was moving down the street. On Tuesday, the paper was off, and serious work on a new restaurant interior was underway. On Saturday, I looked inside and saw shiny, dark wood tables and fifteen or so new staff people in crisp white uniforms having a meeting. FULL REVIEW
