Conversation and cochinita: Yuca's launches salon

Here's a fun idea: Talking and munching at Yuca's new Food for Thought night, the fourth Friday of each month. The first one is this Friday, Jan. 25, from 6-8 at Yuca's on Hollywood, 4666 Hollywood Blvd. From the Yuca's folks: Present your L.A. Public Library card and receive a free beverage. The new Yuca's is all that you loved about the old location minus having to stand in a liquor store parking lot to place your order. Dora took over the old Casa Diaz space--conveniently located across from American Apparel so you can pop over to buy some red tighty-whities while you wait--and is gradually introducing the tried-and-true Yuca's menu to former Casa Diaz patrons. She's onto something as each time I've been since she opened a few months back, the line gets just a bit longer. Aside from the improved seating possibilities, those of you who can't make it up to the old Yuca's on Hillhurst before they close around 6 may now... FULL REVIEW

Yuca's takes over Casa Diaz

Just days after Oprah's visit, Yuca's has branched out to a new, larger location on Hollywood Blvd. Owner Dora says the Hillhurst location will remain open, but as she gets to know the former Casa Diaz kitchen, she will start adding Yuca's signature menu items like the yummy cochinita pibil to the menu of standard Mexican fare. EatingLA already had some excellent avocado-lashed tacos and tortas from the new location, and it looks like Dora is already showing them how it's done. Best of all, the new location has sparkling clean indoor tables and will soon stay open as late as 10 at night. FULL REVIEW

Saturday is tamale day at Yuca's, as if you needed another reason to stand in the parking lot of a liquor store on Hillhurst waiting for your lunch to be handed to you wrapped in tinfoil and served in a brown paper bag. Having recently sampled the cochita pibil at Loteria Grill and Chitzen Itza, I reconfirmed what I had been thinking all along--Yuca's does it best. Of course everyone knows this by now (they won a James Beard award a few years ago for gosh sakes), but sometimes it's nice to reconfirm, especially with a fresh hot cochinita pibil buritto (no beans please). Dora was nowhere to be seen on this particular Saturday afternoon... FULL REVIEW

Owned by the Herrera family and well known to Los Feliz locals Yuca's has been serving up authentic yucatan mexican food since 1976 from a tiny hut on Hillhurst Ave.I first stumbled on to this gem several years ago when I noticed a crowd gathered at lunch time and I've been a big fan since.
