Kate hasn't been feeling well lately, and has managed to read all the books in her apartment. This is where I come in, armed with some literature of my favorite genre (magical realism) and a car with enough gas in the tank to take us somewhere where she can eat real food food as opposed to whatever happened to be lying around the cupboard while she lay ill. Magical realism is what happens when you take real life and then all of a sudden you add special effects. And so being in the vicinity of North Hollywood, I took her to the Sanam Luang Cafe so I could watch the swirls in my Thai iced tea.

If you're never been to Sanamluang Cafe before, you may be thoroughly confused when you walk in. Do I seat myself? Do I order at the counter? Is there a real menu with words, or do I have to pick one of those numbered photos and hope for the best?

I ventured to L.A. and environs this weekend to visit a friend. He had suggested a Thai place in North Hollywood that he had heard about but never tried. When he mentioned that it was called "Sanam...something", I immediately said, "oh Sanamluang. I heard about that place on Chowhound." But for the life of me, I couldn't remember whether Chowhounds gave it a positive or negative review. But we went anyway. It was near two o'clock and our group of three was starving.
