Summer's almost over, and it's still hot. The only good thing about this heat is how much better it makes certain things, like icees, smoothies, and of course - ice cream! So it was time for me to check out Scoops on Heliotrope. (this is a backpost from a couple weeks ago - when it's even hotter!) It seems like such a weird location. A small, cute place decorated with christmas lights next to dark industrial buildings on a small street. But it's known to be the best ice cream in LA, so the crowds still gather, sitting on small tables outside.Scoops offers a variety of flavors - from really unique flavors to dairy-free and vegan...

Friends, I'm very excited to tell you all that Scoops -- LA's most innovative and friendly ice cream shop -- and Spork Foods, an up-and-coming vegan food company from the delightful Heather and Jenny Goldberg (you've read about Jenny's dessert alchemy here before), have teamed up to bring feel-good deliciousness to a whole new level. Scoops will be featuring ice cream sandwiches with the Sporks'

Scoops, a colorful little ice cream shop and gelateria next to LACC on Heliotrope, is the creation of a man named Tai, who went to CalTech and clearly loves his customers. He lets them try each and every flavor as many times as they see fit until they've picked the right one, (although at a dollar a scoop, why not pick two, right?) and relishes watching them grow giddy as they hop from one to the next, slowly building momentum as they make sense of the exotic flavors -- Blackberry Mint, Pea & Tahini, Green Tea & Figs...
Each flavor is made by Tai daily, and no day's menu is exactly the same. So, be careful what you fall in love with,...

Was coming down from Ventura county (from another foodventure, to-be-posted soon) on the 101, and got the sudden pang for ice cream. And so off the Normandie/Melrose exit and into Scoops I went. Again, I'm delivered a $2, two-flavor "scoop" of creamy, dreamy frosty goodness. Pear-pecan-gorgonzola ice cream with crisp, juicy sweetness were wonderful with the buttery pecans and the crumbles of tangy blue cheese; blueberry mascarpone, well, that just taste like cheesecake with fresh blueberry sauce & a la mode! I also tasted other flavors; all were fun to try but didn't really work for my tastebuds, including rosemary-crème fraîche, maple...

While Fosselman's is one of my absolute ice cream faves and much closer to me, when I heard about a gelato/ice cream shop that makes eclectic flavors such as brown bread, orange blossom & rosewater and even vegan varieties that actually taste like ice cre

More exotic flavor gelato~ (see old entries: 1, 2.) I had the Lemon Ginger and Raisin, Walnut with Gorgonzola. I'm so addicted to the later. There're large crumbs of actual gorgonzola cheese inside, it's the ever exciting sweet vs salty taste! The crispy crunchy walnut add a very nice touch. It's my favorite of Scoop's flavor so far. Joan has Pistachio with Orange Blossom Water and Black Tea and Plum, she loves the later.

How can I even begin to talk about Scoops? I really think it's the best find of the summer, nay, of the year. Perhaps of ever. This purveyor of high-concept frozen treats and unbridled goodwill has been around 14 months, but I've only recently learned about it. Therefore, I feel like the last 14 months have been a waste. I first heard about Scoops from my friend Alon, who read about it on his friend Josh's blog. Since I met up with Alon there, I've been wishing I could go back pretty much every day. It's really that good. It's taken my heart.

Back here! This time we got: Chocolate Wasabi (reminds me of Mexican chilli chocolate! Spicy!) and Kiwi sesame. The one at the back is Mocha with Sunflower Seed (LOVE this one!) and Green Tea Vanilla.

Read about this ice-cream place on free paper LA Alternative, I knew that this place is a must go. The owner makes different flavors every day, I got the Jack fruit and lychee and Tiramisu. Both very good! There's a "flavor to suggest" board on the wall where you can write down flavors ideas. People have put down interesting ones like jasmine tea, root beer...etc. We talked to the owner and suggested crazy flavors like kim chi, nyquil ^^;; He told us that he has done unlikely flavors like wasabi (which cured his friend's sinus), beet, oolong tea...and he's working on a Guinness flavor and let us sampled it. Very charming place, can't wait to go back and try more!

And so it begins. Inspired by the L.A. Times' recent roundup of local milkshake emporiums, we decided to check out a few shops. In the name of research, of course. Oh -- and it's hot outside.
