I just linked Pinkberry style yogurt to traditional Korean culinary and confectionary culture for anyone who's interested to know. It can be read here: www.xanga.com/wangkon936
If you haven’t heard, Pinkberry is serving a new flavor of “chilly delight” — coffee. I wont go so far to call it brown berry or dingle berry, but it’s not my favorite combo.
The other night I went into the Sawtelle location (no line BTW) with full intentions of ordering a whole cup of [...]

i finally had my first pinkberry experience. we were driving through the westside on one of the hottest days in a while, and needed a bit of a respite, so we thought it was about time to check out the whole fro-yo or whatever pinkberry is thing. not really knowing where one was, i called information and asked for the shop, and when asked which location, i just named the street i was on, and the operator asked which of the three locations did i want? beverly hills? again, the operator: which of the two on the same street did i want? sheesh. overexpanding much? we picked a location--which was empty and about 15 degrees warmer inside than...

Sort of. The L.A. Times used some of their scarce resources to send samples of Pinkberry to an independent lab, which determined that there are some live cultures in Pinkberry and that their previously published nutrition information is more or less correct (26 calories per ounce, no fat). But apparently there's not quite enough live cultures to qualify it for true yogurt status, or something, so it's still just "swirly goodness" for now instead of frozen yogurt. I cruised around some blogs yesterday to see what people were saying about Pinkberry ingredients and the speculation and vitriol was quite startling. To the person who said "Does...

After multiple posts in anticipation of Pinkberry’s arrival, I have finally tasted it. I hate to admit this, I really do, because I so wanted to dislike it, but…. I enjoyed every last spoonful of the tangy, creamy stuff.
I actually didn’t even know that the Pinkberry down the street had opened yet until [...]

That Damn Pinkberry Song, and Another One Opens in Beverly Hills
The Pinkberry song is just a little too catchy. Go on the website, the swirls start turning, the song gets stuck in our head, we walk around humming it all day, next thing you know, suddenly, we're waiting in line...

Kimi Yoshino just reported in the LA Times a lawsuit by L.A. resident Bryan Williams who contends that the powdered mix which Pinkberry uses in their dessert does not contain "good" bacteria cultures typically found in yogurt. Also, as defined by California's Food and Agriculture, Pinkberry cannot technically be classified as "frozen yogurt" because they mix their product in-store. (Apparently, the state requires frozen yogurt to be mixed off-site for reasons I'm unsure of.) So okay, technically, Pinkberry may not be frozen yogurt in the eyes of California state law. The owner seems to have conceded to that much. But if this guy is...

Finally try the very hyped yogurt from Pinkberry. Apparently there's a yogurt boom in LA right now thanks to Pinkberry. For quite some time there was only one shop in LA locate at West Hollywood. Now it's multiplying fast. There's one opened on 6th street in Koreatown and another coming soon in Larchmont village. A new one opened on Melrose Ave. next to the ever-so-crowded M de Chaya, now with Pinkberry the parking situation is going to be get worse. Unwisely me and my colleagues went there around 5:00 pm. ^^;; We lined up a bit, it wasn't too bad as the WeHo one. They have two flavors: original and green tea, plus various toppings to choose from. The yogurt taste fresh and milky, not too sweet or sour. It's definitely a good refreshing and healthy sweet treat, especially for summer time. Though I don't think I'm crazy enough to go back specifically for them. I still much prefer gelato which I definitely won't mind make effort to drive to/line up for!

After what turned out to ultimately be a quixotic drive across town to a meeting that got cancelled while I was waiting for it to start, I decided that a stop to finally try Pink Berry, the Korean frozen yogurt place poised to soon multiply across LA, would be a good way to rescue the afternoon. I can never get enough fro-yo but this, like most all desserts for me, always means chocolate. Pink Berry prides itself on offering only two flavors, Green Tea and Original, and since I'm not typically a fan of the flavors used widely in Asian desserts (you can keep all your lycheess and dorians), I was slightly disappointed not to find my favorite flavor on offer. A few bites into my small cup of Original was enough to change my mind. The taste is fresh, not too sweet and slightly tart. It reminded me very much of a lemon cream or perhaps the taste of Key Lime Pie. This being LA, I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised to find they have their own doorman, the better to manage what I've heard can be a line that normally snakes down the sidewalk. What next, a valet?

That's right, I caved. I'm normally not one to be a sucker for a trend, but I had to know how something as dull as frozen yogurt could have so many people in such a frenzy.

Back in Japan, one of my favorite daily rituals was to eat a bowl of Meiji Bulgarian yogurt with fresh Fuji apples. Even though I'm back in LA and I have access to all the tacos and fried chicken that I can ever eat, I will always miss my Japanese yogurt.

I have this little Friday afternoon ritual: Manicure at Planet Nails (great nail salon, by the way), followed by frozen yogurt at Pinkberry just across the street.
