Back in the late 1980s, before the arrival of its boutique hotels and other conspicuous excesses, I worked in Manhattan's SoHo district. On hot afternoons, I'd often stroll to a tiny place on Broome Street for a gelato or sorbet....

Gelato, Abraço, Shanghai Cafe, and a Cake-Filled Birthday Bash
Mm, gelato It was just another one of those days. The kind that starts with gelato and ends with cake, interrupted by a feast of Chinese food to pad the stomach in between snacks. That's all that dinner is anyway:...

(what neighborhood is this? i wasn’t sure.)
i hate the massive, bland luxury mCcondos that are infiltrating and taking over the last hold-outs of even pseudo-gritty new york. condos just don’t belong near chinatown, east village, or the lower east side. i realize i’m being a huge hypocrite in that [...]

If I was a celebrity, I’d request a list of items to be wherever I was working. It would be fun for me and eventually it would be fun for the assistants because they could make fun of me. I am developing my list of food request, and so far, I’ve come up with two. The assistant would have to find me freshly made Dominican pasteles wrapped in banana leaf. I can just imagine the Mommy Dearest moments. “This isn’t Dominican, it’s Puerto Rican. I said wrapped in banana leaf, not waxed paper. Can’t you hear me? NO WAXED PAPER !!!”

if you haven’t been here yet, you MUST go. i first tasted their gelato and sorbet at ici in fort greene, one of the many restaurants that serves ildg’s gelato (that’s my abbreviation, not theirs). then when steph mentioned it a month or so ago, we made a plan to go. and then went again this past wednesday. we have a grand plan of trying all of their nearly 100 flavors (i don’t have the patience to count, but you can go look at them on their website). so far, i think we’ve tried 10 or 11 since you can get 3 flavors in a medium. yes it’s pricey ($4.50 for medium), but it is DEFINITELY worth it. they have the most intense flavors (for example, the buttermilk is disgusting to me, with its reflective sour flavor). so what are you waiting for? Go!

Pizza: it's the college student's staple. You can eat it for dinner! Or lunch! OR BREAKFAST! You can even brush your teeth with it! Despite the many uses of pizza, which may or may not be life sustaining, I rarely eat it. I grew up eating pizza, no question, but that was the school "pizza day" stuff. Flaccid, dripping in yellow oil and heavy with cheese, I easily gobbled up two slices (even when I was in elementary school, oh my), but I wouldn't be very drawn to that kind of pizza now. (Actually, there's this place near my house called Brick Oven Pizza that I used to go to a lot with my family since it was pretty good. I haven't been there in years, but I'd be interested in trying it again.)

Eagle-eyed Chowhounders might just deserve a mention in our wills, especially when they clue us in to such once-in-a-blue-moon finds like Il Laboratorio del Gelato’s cheddar gelato. Apparently, Il Laboratorio brews up a big batch of the stuff every month or so for 24 Prince, a Modern American restaurant in Soho that serves it as part of an apple crisp/cheddar ice cream combo. But on the rare occasions when the gelateria decides to make a bit extra, they sell it in the shop. You just have to be ready to pounce when it’s there. And with a quick afternoon e-mail to HungryMan, who works Downtown, we pounced.

I feel more full right now than I did yesterday, which is kind of amazing. Why? Welllll, sit back, grab some unhealthy easy-to-munch-on foodstuffs, and I'll tell you the story of "Walking Around A Few Miles And Eating Along The Way With My Friend Jason Because Why Else Would We Walk For Miles? Dim sum is a lovely thing. Sit on your bum and wait for ladies to push their food-laden carts to your table so you can load up on mini-steamers and plates full of aaaanything your heart desires, as long as your heart desires mainly meaty and greasy Chinese appetizer-esque dishes. ...Actually, your heart probably doesn't want that. But whatever, it doesn't have taste buds. Just atherosclerosis! (Actually, I guess those are in the arteries, but let's not get technical.)

Even though it's close by, I don't take enough advantage of all the fooding opportunities in the Lower East Side. Patricia, my fooding partner for the afternoon, said she felt like she's missed out on one and a half years of possible good eats. Our plan? TO MAKE UP FOR THIS GASTRONOMIC MONSTROSITY, ASAP.

One quick entry about New York ice creams before winter hits. What I have learned in my explorations of the best frozen desserts in New York is that no ice cream parlor does everything well - there are gaps and pleasures throughout.

They Blinded Her With Science: Laboratorio del Gelato
Danna just loves gelato. Ever since her first business trip to Milan, she's talked about how good the gelato over there was and how different and underwhelming the gelato was here in NYC. So having read about Il Laboratorio del Gelato on another blog somewhere as well as on Chowhound, I decided to make a date of it.
