I made two OpenTable (OT) reservations for my birthday - dinner at The Orchard and lunch at Eleven Madison Park. OT allows you to send a comment to the maitre d'/host(ess) when you make your reservation, so I, legitimately, wrote "I look forward to dining at your restaurant for my birthday" - a test to see if this made a difference to my dining experience. The short answer is yes, but as I'll discuss later, not at both restaurants.

Taking a good photograph inside The Orchard, a newish Italian bistro on the Lower East Side, is nearly impossible, thanks to the ochre-tinted lighting and very pale wood in the restaurant’s dining room. We tried filters, white balancing, and even a little prayer, but in the end, every snapshot we took required a few heavy blows with the Photoshop hammer, leaving us with what you see here. Fortunately, as we discovered during dinner late last week with Pescatore and Schnicksy, getting a good meal at The Orchard is far, far easier than taking a picture of it.

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the concept of “searching.” We are all, it seems, searching for something. Whether it's something completely mundane—the perfect shower curtain (Jonathan Adler), the best lip gloss (Fresh Lip Shine in Nova), a great pair of jeans (AGs)—or something more essential—true love, a rewarding career, a sense of inner peace, a perfect meal—we all yearn and search. Sometimes in vain, and sometimes not.
