The Saturday before Time Out NY’s article on the best pizza places in New York came out, I was already thinking of pizza. It was just a mere coincidence that TONY had the same thought process. Of course, the “best” pizza is always so relative and arbitrary. And it’s New York- there’s almost as many pizzerias as Starbucks here! Anyway, Eva and I compiled a list of places to go with the help of TONY. We came up with about 8 places that were going to be in the areas we were shopping that day [we decided it’d be a good idea to walk off the calories]. Unfortunately, time didn’t permit us to visit all the places we wanted, but here’s a quick overview of our day.

Choux pastry surrounded by pie crust sounds like a combination that only an American– or perhaps a lipophilic Scot–would invent, but in fact, this particular brand of butter-on-butter action has a surprising provenance: it is Japanese. French cuisine, and especially traditional baking, has been in vogue in Japan for many years now, and by most accounts, some of the very best French chefs hail from the Land of the Rising Sun. If you remain unconvinced, watch an episode of the original Iron Chef, and you’ll see that some inventive new twists are being put on the cuisine that Julia Child worked so hard to codify 50 years ago.

They say it's the best place around for cream puffs. I'm actually not a cream puff type, but I did stop to sample the Chocolate Fondant. Not bad. Chocolately - but hardly transcendant. But if you're a cream puff fan, you should know where this place is located. There. Now you're duly served. Try 'em and let me know.

I feel more full right now than I did yesterday, which is kind of amazing. Why? Welllll, sit back, grab some unhealthy easy-to-munch-on foodstuffs, and I'll tell you the story of "Walking Around A Few Miles And Eating Along The Way With My Friend Jason Because Why Else Would We Walk For Miles? Hint: Not For Exercise."

Trips to the dentist were a terror. Every appointment meant another meeting with the drill. By the end of my childhood, I had more metal in my mouth than a Southern rapper. My lapses in brushing were partly to blame, but it had even more to do with my love of sweets. No sugar was totally safe in my house. The freezer was the Bermuda Triangle when it came to pints of ice cream. Boxes of Ferrer Rocher vanished once the seal was snapped. I practically gargled with Yoo-Hoo.

Oh, how lovely it is to have friends like Jason who don't mind doing a good NYC food crawl, even on a muggy Saturday afternoon. Jason came down from Vassar with two of his friends, who we'd meet up with later in Chinatown to behold the largest variety of dumplings I've ever eaten at one time.

One thing I’ve noticed since coming back to New York after 3 years is the large number of Japanese independent stores and restaurants. There’s a few stores for example down on Lafayette in SOHO that sell skateboarding gear and fashionable clothes and have that Tokyo Pop edge to them. I’m quite impressed I have to say. Last week visited the Cream Puff franchise of Beard Papa. OK what kind of name is Beard Papa? I’m not exactly clear but apparently when Beard Papa Cream Puffs opened last year on the Upper West Side, the line was out the door and around the block. Kind of like Krispy Cream Donuts when it opened out in Las Vegas. Anyhow Beard Papa specializes in cream puffs and like Krispy Cream, they feature hot and fresh baked goods. At Beard Papa, you have a choice of filling including chocolate, vanilla, and green tea flavors. It’s all about freshness - Beard Papa bakes cream puffs and fills them immediately.

For every trying moment in which the city is cruel and mean, there's another full of bliss and whimsy that makes my heart thump with true love.

Ho-hum. It’s quite a dreary day in New York. It’s raining, and it’s cold. It’s cold enough for me to see my breath - and everyone else’s. Well, now that I think of it, it’s pretty romantic feeling. Standing in the rain and seeing puffs of steam from your breathing. Days like these really make you want to reflect. And I might as well - my pizza dough is sitting in the fridge, waiting for tomorrow afternoon, and I’m too tired to get off my bum (Heh - bum). Since I was stuck inside all day this Friday, I might as well talk about another Friday. The Friday I finally went to Beard Papa. For those who don’t know - Beard Papa is a Japanese giant cream puff shop; they only sell cream puffs and cheesecake sticks.

I have no time to write this post. I have to write 10 pages of a screenplay and read "How I Learned to Drive" by Paula Vogel before tomorrow morning. But I feel the need to tell you about cream puffs. Specifically, the cream puffs my playwriting cohorts and I ate yesterday on a break between classes.
