Had a great day of fooding today - a quick recap: Went to my favorite Malaysian restaurant of all time in the whole city - New Malaysia restaurant (Chinatown). This place is hidden in a little alleyway between Bowery and Elizabeth Street and is still always packed no matter when you go.

Max Brenner's in Union Square is what I would call a "Willy Wonka wannabe." It tries to be a great chocolate boutique however, I find their food very disappointing, especially the S'more crepe that was quite pricey for what it's worth. But I do recommend their Italian Dark hot chocolate. It's more pudding-like in texture and it's quite tasty.

I’m not the type of person who can see a shop sign that reads Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man and just keep walking. Upon entering, I found myself in one of the most over-the-top, overwhelming spaces that I’ve encountered in NYC. Everything is some shade of chocolate, and most things are chocolate in this 5,000 square foot space near Union Square. At the crossroads of the gift shop, pastry counter, and restaurant areas, you’ll see bins full of hot chocolate powders, a glass-topped table full of truffles, chocolate cakes, chocolate marshmallow pizzas, chocolate bar-filled bagels ready to be warmed, shelves of chocolate candies in boxes, and… sandwiches. There are fantastic pictures here. It feels a bit gimmicky, but it all comes out on just this side of charming — if you know that one thing is true within this chocolate fog, it’s that there’s obviously a passion for celebrating chocolate here.

Getting our drink on at brick lane and max brenner’s
I have been drinking a lot lately, I would have to say in terms of days of the week, it is definitely akin to what took place in high school. Yes, I started young, but it was a good thing, because I didn’t do the whole drunken college student thing. Well, maybe the first year…. Anyways, the boys and I went out on Friday night. We started out at Brick Lane Curry House, one of the many Indian restaurants along E. 6th. We ordered a bottle of Shiraz and the restaurant recently came up with their own stout, so we all got a sample of that too.

Newly opened, and decorated in rich brown hues, Max Brenner's is a Willy Wonka wetdream - complete with a matrix of chocolate colored pipes crossing the ceiling, and sample tubs of varied confections gathered at the mini store near the entrance. Beautifully rendered, the glossy menus are pure (chocolate) food porn, with artfully photographed pictures of shakes, fondues and other chocolately goodness. Does the concept work? Mostly. The atmosphere is fun, and the service...acceptable. Of the three items that we personally sampled, only one was truly great. The cookie shake was good, but powdery (though fun to drink, presented in an "Alice in Wonderland" sipping cup, complete with metal straw.) The peanut crepe was rich - too rich, with an overpoweringly peanut butter flavor. Ah, but the chocolate pizza with marshmellows? Now that was inspired - complete with rich, melted chocolate and gooey marshmellows. Half a pizza was enough - and definitely worth the overall trip. As for the atmosphere - suffice it to say that Max Brenner's isn't haute cuisine in the chocolate dept. - the vibe is strictly Cheesecake Factory, so those with higher pretentions will probably be turned off. But for the rest of us Max Brenners might be the perfect celebratory stop, say - once every year? Go at least once - and experience Max's Love for yourself.

The new Manhattan Max Brenner cafe/restaurant/chocolate shop, which has only been open for three weeks, already has all the makings of a complete Willy Wonka experience, minus the Oompa Loompas. Willy’s been replaced by a charming fashionable bald Israeli man, but if you’re anything like me, this restaurant is a dangerous place to be, and you’ll have to resist the temptation of going completely Augustus Gloop on the place.

And that is how we decided to go to Max Brenner’s Chocolate Shoppe in Union Square yesterday- after a call to invite Eva, of course. Only, on the day of… there was a little incident with Eva & her tummy.

...Wait, wuh? I didn't know much about the Israeli chocolatier (besides that he's bald and makes chocolates) until he opened one of his combination store-and-cafe chocolate-filled wonderlands in NYC. Yesterday Jason and I checked it out. For dinner. It's okay to eat chocolate-based goods as a meal if you're on vacation. And perhaps if you fast for the following few days.

I dropped by Max Brenner with a few friends for the whole chocolate experience. At 9:30 p.m., there was a 20-minute wait, but it quickly passed as we admired the offerings in the chocolate shop. I noticed an all-purpose product called Fresh - it's a fondue, mousse or hot chocolate depending on how you prepare it.

Max Brenner, the closest thing to a real life Willy Wonka that I think we're gonna find, officially opened the doors to his first US shop/ restaurant Thursday evening at 5:30. I swung by around 9PM in the hopes of avoiding the throngs of people. No luck. Also no luck in getting a "Choctail"-- one of their iced chocolatey drinks-- to go. Take out, I was told, was not yet ready for prime time. I was bummed but cheered myself up by buying some of their delectable chocolate truffles in the chocolate shop portion of the restaurant which was ready with registers a-blazing.

I never had the chance to dine at Zakuro before it closed, but I'm aflush with excitement about what's planned for the space it occupied. Max Brenner Chocolates, which used to operate the most wonderful chocolate bar at Harrod's, opens at 141 2nd Ave. on July 1. Another location, at 841 Broadway, will be opening on June 1. If my memory serves me well, Max Brenner will give ABC's Michel Cluizel Cafe a run for its money.
