Dispatches from the Front Lines of the Food Wars
Dec 20, 2006
This is a regular Sunday afternoon pit stop for me and my booze-addled sidekick, Chris. Nicky’s classic Vietnamese sandwich is an essential nutrition booster after a weekend of foodless, near brain-hemorrhaging drinking, especially for Chris, who’s beset with crippling immune deficiencies. The classic sandwich has three out of the four main food groups – pate, ham, and ground pork (all that’s missing is bacon) – encased in a miraculous French loaf (the good kind). There are chicken, Portobello mushroom, and sardine offshoots as well, but they’re of scant nutritional or moral value.

I was surprised to note the opening of a second Banh Mi parlor in the Boerum Hill area – when I moved in, we barely dared dream about such luxury, after all. Now we have a branch of Nicky’s, the original of which still exists on 2nd Street and Avenue A in the East Village (and the antecedent of which was on this side of the river in Sunset Park).

In suburbia’s conquest of New York, Subway and Quizno’s lead the culinary front, spreading almost as rapidly as Starbucks. But a quiet band of outsiders is fighting the good food fight, on the fringes. These are the shops that specialize in bánh mì, the French-accented Vietnamese sandwich that inspires cultish devotion among its fans (see The Porkchop Express). The latest reinforcements have risen up in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Boerum Hill. First there was Hanco’s last spring, and now, just around the corner, there’s Nicky’s Vietnamese Sandwiches.
