Danger on the UWS

Cupcake, cupcake, chocolate, cocoa, cookie, cookie. Within a very concentrated area of the Upper West Side are a number of pitfalls for a trying-to-be-good Sweet Freak. Magnolia’s second branch is in a sprawling corner space at Columbus and 69th, awash with sunlight, packed with baby strollers, and churning out bake sheets of pastel cupcakes. They seem a wee bit smaller than the ones downtown, but anything is worth not enduring that god-awful line. Onward to 72nd Street, walking west—boom: Buttercup Bake Shop. More cupcakes. Made famous by Sex and the City, the cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery are touted as tasty, superlative...and generally irresistable.  Today, I strolled over to Magnolia - to test the theory myself.   The counter offers an array of cupcakes with do it yourself service, as well as several other sweet desserts (such as cheesecake and bread pudding.)  The atmosphere is preppy, and the space a little crowded (expect a line, though it moved fast for me.)  As for the cupcakes?  Surprisingly reasonably priced (given the location), they only cost about $2.00 a pop - and the super sweet icing was the best part.  The cupcake itself was no great shakes - and certainly not worth the return trip.  Bottom line?  If desserts are your thing, its probably worth checking out once.  But don't expect an earth shattering experience FULL REVIEW

NYC Dining: The Magnolia Bakery

Ever since that goofy SNL skit about the Narnia movie hit the ‘Net like a virus and has spawned numerous parody international versions (1) (2) (3) , I’ve been incredibly curious about this particular Greenwich Village bakery, which specializes in cupcakes. When we were in New York recently, I made no plans for cupcakes. But when we were strolling through a village (?) I suddenly spied a charming little cafe with the words Magnolia Bakery above the door. "Oooh!", I exclaimed to my English mother and sister, "This place is really famous, we have to try it". Yes, they do make some of the best cupcakes in New York. And yes, this bakery is the epicenter of the cupcake craze. But we’d like you to think twice about what you order at Magnolia Bakery, because quite frankly, it is far too easy to get carried away when you’re handed a little cardboard box and told you can only purchase six cupcakes. Focus is what’s required here, as there are two desserts there that are even better than the cupcakes, desserts that demand your immediate attention. So focus FULL REVIEW

Perhaps if I could get all the people who are not so happy with America to come on down and sample the sugary grain product-alicious bakery world of NYC, they'd be happier. Or fatter. Or both.
