That’s not wholly unusual: I head out to many restaurants in a prospecting vein, not in a must-write-individually-about-them vein, checking out a place I’ve never been, or a place I haven’t been to in a while, or a place that may have improved, or a place that changed ownership or chefs, or a place . . .

Swimster took me out last Tuesday for a special birthday dinner. And the best part was it was a surprise and it stayed a surprise. I hate surprises (well, not really) but every time I'm told I'm getting one, I try my hardest to guess what it is. Is this weird? So I took a couple guesses: Il Mulino, Babbo, Balthazar, and Gramercy Park Tavern.

I literally walk down Minetta Lane daily during the school year. There had been a restaurant at the end of Minetta for years and years. One day they closed shop and as always a new restaurant took over the space in no time at all. Bellavitae welcome to the neighborhood.

Based on aesthetics alone—the warmth of the wood-burning oven, the saffron-colored walls, the rustic country tables, the pine floors, the long and inviting bar, and the French doors flung open to Minetta Lane—I would dine at Bellavitae on a regular basis. It is the sort of spot that you yearn for when you leave—a place that leaves your cheeks warm and pink and your belly nice and plump from the simple pleasures of the Italian table.
