I overhear the nice guy behind the bar: “It’s like drinking melted chocolate.” Say no more; I’m in for a single shot of hot cocoa. I’m at Michel Cluizel, world-renowned Parisian chocolatier who opened in ABC Carpet two years ago. It’s a relief to have place for top-notch chocolates that’s not Soho or midtown (and dangerously close to my apartment). Especially on a grey December afternoon when you have the day off from work and want to sit and zen out a bit. The cocoa comes in a dainty little espresso cup. It hardly looks like enough, but it’s made with heavy cream and a blend of five different dark cocoa beans from different...

Why Did I Miss Out on You, Will? (Dessert Studio at Michel Cluizel)
Earlier before I had my actual late lunch with Sam (last Thursday) on the previous post, I did have an eye-opener of a dessert tasting at Dessert Studio at Michel Cluizel inside the luxurious bohemian housewares store, ABC Carpet & Home. This particular dessert bar, if you will, is ran by the well known, avant-garde [...]

in the oddest little spot — contiguous (no sealed walls) with a home furnishing store, a tapas restaurant, a pan-latin restaurant, and le pain quotidien — is a very upscale parisian chocolatier. after reading about it [...]

I have to admit something - I've never been a chocoholic.
I know. You're shocked. You're disappointed. But, it's true.
In fact, when it comes to picking something off of a typical high-falutin dessert menu, I steer clear from the Flourless Chocolate Cake and its miniature warm molten brethren. I'm usually more of a fruit or nut person. Chocolate isn't even my favorite flavor of ice cream. I'm a Butter Pecan fan.
There, I said it. I've come clean.
So now you'll understand why I felt a bit concerned embarking upon a chocolate tasting session at the lauded Michel Cluizel, a tiny retail and restaurant testament to all things...

A Short But Busy Mid-Week: Payard, Swich, Chocolat Michel Cluizel
Michel Cluziel Chocolat is a chocolate boutique found in ABC Carpet in Union Square. This place is one of the few places in the city where chocoholics can get their fill on exquisite chocolate and actually get to eat their chocolate desserts and get an alcoholic drink.

J and I were wandering around the luxurious ABC Carpet & Homes today, searching for a wedding gift, when we found that they've recently inducted a fancy chocolatier in the back: Chocolat Michel Cluizel. The rear anteroom of ABC, where the chocolate bar is, opens onto three adjacent restaurants (Lucy Latin Kitchen, Pipa Tapas y Mas, and my personal favorite, Le Pain Quotidien), and when ABC closes at night, the chocolatier is only available via those restaurants, speakeasy-in-the-back-room style. They have cute little cafe tables, live music in the evening, thick hot cocoa you can buy in seven-dollar mugs or two-dollar "hits," and a beautiful array of expensive, elegant confections. They don't carry many organic chocolate products or anything free-trade, soI won't be frequenting it (as I can find more ethical chocolate elsewhere), but J and I didn't leave without a frothy, creamy mug of homemade chocolate milk over ice. Mmm!

Michel Cluizel: Chocolate with a missing ingredient
Purists insist that dark chocolate should only have five ingredients: cocoa mass (aka chocolate liquor or paste), sugar, cocoa butter, vanilla and an emulsifier (usually soy lecithin). Is there butter or vegetable fat in your chocolate, as in Godiva’s? That’s a travesty: substitute fats don’t quite melt in your mouth. Is there vanillin, an artificial flavoring, instead of vanilla? That’s another chocolate no-no.

Please pardon my recent lapse in posting; I've been busy consuming my own weight in chocolate. The opening of Michel Cluizel Chocolat is both a blessing and a curse, because my attempt to save room for dessert is now an attempt to save all room for dessert.

Lauren, my beloved former roommate, was in town for one of her labor law cases (she's a labor lawyer) and she called me Monday to go to dinner. I quickly whipped out my New York magazine and set upon the task of choosing a venue that would serve both our needs. My needs are very complex: Something new but not too trendy; something exciting but not too bizarre. Lauren's needs are much simpler. They can be summed up in one word. Chocolate.
