Mini Lower Manhattan Pizza Tour (w/ pit stops to Beard Papa’s & S’Mac)
The Saturday before Time Out NY’s article on the best pizza places in New York came out, I was already thinking of pizza. It was just a mere coincidence that TONY had the same thought process. Of course, the “best” pizza is always so relative and arbitrary. And it’s New York- there’s almost as many pizzerias as Starbucks here! Anyway, Eva and I compiled a list of places to go with the help of TONY. We came up with about 8 places that were going to be in the areas we were shopping that day [we decided it’d be a good idea to walk off the calories]. Unfortunately, time didn’t permit us to visit all the places we wanted, but here’s a quick overview of our day.

pizza is good. even bad pizza is good. in new york there seems to be a pizza restaurant on every block . it’s like ice cream, certain foods are so ingrained and comforting that pretty much any version of it is edible. especially when you’re hungry. even more so when you had to wait on line for it.

If expectations can potentially breed disappointment, then a lack thereof can bring delights. Such was my Friday night with my new pal Lady M. We started with a simple plan: to go to the Soho Sephora for a wee girly-girl cosmetics run, followed by a glass of vino in Nolita.

Today, I braved the thunderstorms to travel over to the brand-new S'mac, home of 10 different varieties of homemade macaroni and cheese. Unfortunately for me, half of NYC had the same idea, and by the time I arrived, S'mac had actually run out of food. It was 6 p.m., and they would not reopen until 7. Crestfallen, I walked out of the shop. A few doors down, Una Pizza Napoletana was half-empty.

Bene is a new Italian culture magazine that will be distributed in "150 of the best Italian restaurants in the United States, starting May 15th." Why am I telling you this? Well Bene's Editorial Director, Joanna Goddard, wrote me recently to see if I wanted to write for them. "Umm," I wrote back, "You know I'm not Italian right?" She wrote back "yes, not a problem" and then offered to take me to dinner. This is the story of that dinner.

I was so glad to find out last night that I am not the only one in New York City who has “WRITE AN ANGRY LETTER TO LOMBARDI’S PIZZA” on my to do list. I picked up a woman in Park Slope who told me she was going to Allen and Stanton. It was midnight, and she had to leave her friends at the bar so she could head home and go back to work. But first she wanted to stop for a slice to sober up. “Rosario’s?” I asked, judging from her destination. “Yeah, how’d you know?” she said. “Well I’d hope you aren’t going to Ray’s.”

I had decided a while ago that I wouldn't post reviews of all of the restaurants I visit in NYC. But while I do like to keep this site focused on documenting my own cooking, I would be remiss if not mentioning who, what and where influences how I cook in my own kitchen.

I discovered it last week. It was a warm night (read: above 15 degrees) and my friend Court and I were heading home from a benefit for Save the Children. After drinking way too much red wine and not getting our hands on any hors d’oeurves, we were hungry for something good, but quick. Court said he had the perfect place. And yes, he did. It was Una Pizza Napoletana. But, he said the hours were odd, and he hoped they were open. (Indeed, they are only open Thursday –Saturday from 5pm until they run out of fresh dough, and on Sundays from noon until they are sold out.)

It took some convincing to get me out to Una Pizza Napoletana last night. I'd already eaten enough pizza for the week: an entire plain pie at Patsy's on Tuesday, then six slices at Patsy's again on Wednesday night. But when co-worker Honey P. reminded me of my plans to visit the new Neapolitan pizza shop that had just moved from Point Pleasant, New Jersey to the East Village—and offered her pleasant company for the excursion—I knew I couldn't shirk my pizza-eating duties
