Trulli are traditional stone houses from the southern Italian region of Puglia, distinguished by their conical, mortar-free stone roofs. The design of this expansive restaurant, and the Apulian cuisine you'll find there, are likewise free of flourishes.

January is FoxyLady's birthday month, which means time to celebrate. The last time the three lush-keteers (FoxyLady, BermudaBabe and myself) got together for a birthday dinner, this happened. FoxyLady recently turned 27, but I was in Puerto Vallarta for a friend's wedding. I felt bad I was missing the festivities until she told me her mom, a flight attendant, was flying her first class to Buenos Aires for some pampering. A two hour massage in Buenos Aires costs a mere $35. I didn't know how BermudaBabe and I would compete with a first class ticket to Buenos Aires, or a two hour massage, but we were up to the challenge. When I discovered...

Remember I wrote about a gloomy day I had about a week ago, right before St. Patty's day? Well, Winette told me she was kidnapping me from work Friday night and putting me out of my misery with some serious alcohol. I promise, no more sniveling. So off we went, into the crowded green streets of New York, her in her usual black and me in my loud Irish t-shirt I sneakily purchased that morning at Hallmark. It was basically an "I Heart NY" t-shirt but instead of the heart and the white, the t-shirt itself was green with white writing and had a four-leaf clover where the heart would be. A must-have for any Irishman in New York who's not afraid to show their colors on St. Pat's.

I had been unhappy with my last two experiences at I Trulli - mostly regarding the flight of wines I had at the enoteca one night. The smug and generally unpleasant bartender served one awful wine after the next (and in one unbelievable escapade...tried pouring me the same wine I had turned down).

If you don't crave the fanfare of a multi-course meal, but rather a glass of wine and a light dish, NYC's wine bars were made for you. Every day it seems that another excellent restaurant has spun off a cozy, informal lounge. Al Di La Vino and Bar @ Etats Unis spring to mind, as does the lovely little Enoteca I Trulli.

So after dinner at Eleven Madison Park, I decided to stop by I Trulli Enoteca for a glass of wine before heading to an empty home - with Danna still in Orlando. I sit down at one of the two empty barstools next to a woman who seemed to be enjoying her wine and looking for someone to talk to -- as the bar was filled with younger couples on 2nd or 3rd dates or recently married. I sit down and right away am greeted by this woman to my right, Deb. Deb is remarkably funny, has an infectious laugh but gets on the nerves of the bartender and I can imagine that I was a relief to the others in the bar as a "blocker". I was happy to be that person. She was good company with endless stories about wine.

The Right Man, the Right Restaurant, the Right Breakfast
Yesterday was the anniversary of S’s and my first date. Neither of us is terribly into Valentine’s Day, so in a tiny rebellion against the Hallmarkization of everything, we celebrate our own milestone instead. Budget-restricted food lover that I am, this generally translates into dinner at a highly-recommended restaurant (see my birthday dinner at Blue Hill at Stone Barns). Last night was I Trulli on East 27th Street.

Nothing really dreadful happened to me at work yesterday. And, yet I was in a bit of a funk as I headed to I Trulli to join my friend Cindy for what was to be my last supper in a whirlwind round of Restaurant Week prix fixe meals.
