This place on the outskirts of Chinatown (conveniently a few steps off the #6 train) has alot of small dish samplers of Vietnamese food at the counter. They're going to keep me busy for quite some time, I'm sure. Candy items, and several great and cheap Bahn Mi sandwiches - alot of their stuff isn't labelled, but they have a menu, so you can point at it, thus surmounting any language barrier FULL REVIEW

Sau Voi was the first store to offer Banh Mi in New York City, and for that they deserve our thanks. The owner Richard Lee hails from Saigon, but he got his Manhattan start on Bowery about 15 years back. He has since moved to the corner of Lafayette and Walker. Only a stone's throw from the courthouses, his shop is a model of eclectic space-management. He stuffs Vietnamese tapes, cds and dvds, alongside sundries, gelatins, noodles, spring rolls, appetizers, beverages, sweets, and an impressive 16 varieties of Banh Mi... in less than 200 square feet of retail space. One of the great un- or under-told restaurant stories of New York of recent years is the renaissance of Chinatown in the wake of 9/11, after the terrorist attacks just about killed the place. But these days, whenever I take a walk there, I see new restaurants everywhere. And it’s not just cheap places, either. The south end of Mott Street, for instance, has become a high-end restaurant row, including Ping’s and Sweet ‘n’ Tart, two of the finest Chinese kitchens in New York. FULL REVIEW
