I've been obsessing to go to Sushi of Gari for a while and so Sunday was the day my dreams came true. My wife and I got a call from a friend from Japan and he invited us to have dinner in the city. Good sushi was due and we made the call to visit Gari. My first, my wife's third time. When it comes to sushi, I'm a purist.. and I gotta say, I didn't want to "love it", but it was just that good. Gari himself...

Our friends have been patrons of Gari for 20 years, before Gari opened Gari Sushi. At the last minute last night we were invited to come along to the pre-opening at Gari Sushi on Restaurant Row. This is his fourth restaurant, the other three are on the Upper West Side, Upper East Side and Tokyo. Tonight his new restaurant on West 46th Street between 8/9th will open to the public.

I was craving sushi but did not want to go home too late so I looked for a sushi place around the upper west side. I found Gari on Columbus Avenue with all its Frank Bruni and Food & Wine writeups on the window and I thought, this could be promising. Because we walked in without a reservation, we weren’t able to sit at the bar. I love ordering the omakase only if I can talk to the sushi chef so that I can watch what’s he’s doing. For ten pieces at about $65 (about $75 if you also want sashimi), I opted for the sushi-by-piece instead.

For My Money New York City Entry #106 Sushi of Gari
A few days ago I had a reservation for dinner at Masa. I couldn't pull the trigger. My New York dinner adventures have dented hopes for retirement, and, even for you dear readers, I chose not to put myself on the street, begging seal-style for raw fish. With two days and counting, I canceled. A sushi banquet whose tariff would have landed on the far side of half-a-G was too lush for this working stiff.

In late October, a friend and I had dinner at Gari. The place doesn’t seem to be as crowded as reports after the restaurant first opened, so perhaps the buzz has died down. From the time we arrived (6:00) to the time we left (7:15), it wasn’t full. I do realize that those are early hours for a Saturday night dinner in New York, but we had an opera to catch. If you’re looking for another pre-Lincoln Center option, Gari should be on your list.
