The other night me and old friend, Peter Vermaelen, and corporate chef Mark Slutsky, both of McCain Foods, went to R U B for part of our grazing through New York City's downtown barbecue triangle. What's the downtown barbecue triangle? Well, it's the triangle formed by RUB, Hill Country NY and Blue Smoke. All three are within walking distance and make a great BBQ crawl. (More on that later!) And yes, there are other BBQ triangles in NYC. We were in an eating frenzy that night and at RUB we decided to focus on the ribs, pastrami, bacon and the duck. Pastrami, bacon and duck in a barbecue restaurant? Only in New York kids, only in New...

Barbeque Royalty at RUB, New York’s Palace of Pork
With my wife as my dining companion for my second visit to RUB, I was able to sample 4 meats and 4 sides and get another perspective on the place. This time, we got a half a combo's worth of the burnt ends and they were again stellar: crisp and loaded with rub on the outside, super tender, super moist and super flavorful inside. I prefer these to 95% of the steaks I've had, and I've eaten some excellent steaks. The other half of the combo was smoked turkey.

It's great to see that New York's barbecue restaurants are finally getting the respect they deserve. Finally, the reviewers are reviewing New York's barbeque restaurants without comparison to their southern counterparts. This is some great news. New York Magazine has just named RUB Barbecue, NYC's best. Andrew and Scottie at RUB are two of the nicest guys you'll ever want to meet. (In the interest of full disclosure, I consider them both personal friends of mine.) I wish them much success.

Righteous Urban Barbecue (or "RUB") is my favorite barbecue restaurant in Manhattan. I’ve had several excellent meals there, and its location is convenient. Here are two reviews, the first dating from August 29, 2005.

One thing that should make you raise an eyebrow at my food reviews is that, unlike the critic for the Times (and most reputable papers), I only visit a place once before I do a write-up. This gives you a nice instant capture of a dining establishment at a specific moment in time in a specific moment in my life but it doesn't in any way represent a fair comprehensive examination of a restaurant's quality. For that you have the professionals. With me, you get what you pay for. And you pay nothing!

R.U.B.--an acronym for Righteous Urban BBQ--opened up three blocks below me on 23rd street more than a month ago. Many times I would walk past, gaze into the windows and say "one day, one day."
