I watched the Noodle Bar open. I heard it was really good. School ended yesterday at noon and I made the executive decision that I was taking Josh and his pal out for lunch at the Noodle Bar.

I've been eyeing Noodle Bar for the past couple of months as they prepared to open. It's weird to get a sandwich from a place called Noodle Bar, but noodles don't travel well, and I had to walk from West 4th to the office. So I'll try them another time.

Remember poor Yumcha, the Chinese dork Frank Bruni took to the prom? I used to walk by that place every day on the way to and from work. The decor really turned me off -- the red on black cliches, all the faux Chinese fonts, that gauche silver porthole door. Fetishy pan-Asian/fusion places make my skin crawl. I'm not anti-assimilation, but maybe I am a little anti-miscegenation when it comes to certain foods. I'm not sure I will ever be able to accept kimchi-cheese frottage.

Andrea Strong has the market on New York restaurant openings and closings and I defer to her frequently when I want to read up on New York restaurant gossip. It was on her site, in fact, that I first read about Noodle Bar. She wrote: "Quentin Dante, who opened and closed Yumcha with enough drama for a dozen reality shows, has opened up Noodle Shop on Carmine Street, just around the corner from his ill-fated pan-Asian spot." Carmine Street? That's my favorite haunt in the Village for delicious eats. I commanded James and Stella to meet me there before seeing "Blue Velvet" at Film Forum last night.
