A last-minute decision after a much-needed downpour led us to Barça 18 off Union Square for some stiff drinks and small plates of Spanish food. The spicy chorizo hit the spot and left us hungry for more. We ordered the dry cured pork loin and the Catalan Garrotxa cheese ($4 for two small pieces) before we shared the crab pizza topped with tarragon and roasted peppers, the octopus with sweet pepper confit and the lamb skewers in red pepper chutney which interestingly tasted just like the chorizo. A small pan of paella negra with mussels and shrimps in squid ink sealed our night.

It was Carebear's birthday at the end of January and a big group of us planned a dinner to celebrate. I love birthday celebrations! They're just excuses to break out of the doldrums of routine, meet up with friends you don't see that often, and go nuts, which is what we did. I guess I should give up on the notion that we'll ever grow out of this "going nuts" tendency, seeing that our Wahoo five year reunion is coming up in May...

Steve Hanson is one of those restaurateurs that people either seem to love or hate. Some industry wags can’t stand his formulaic approach, and his robotic, overly studied service style. Others admire his success, his shameless mass-market appeal, his ability to create buzz and serve decent food to everyone from your cousins from Idaho, your blind date from lord knows where, to your parents on the Upper East Side.

I headed once more to a neighborhood I once lived and worked in. In fact I once worked in the very building of the first bar that I visited today. Guardian Insurance outgrew its space where the W Hotel now stands and for awhile rented additional space in various buildings around the area. This was one of them at 225 Park Avenue South.
