In search of authentic fresh soba, I ran across Soba-Ya in the pages of the Oyaji Life website - which gave it a full 5 out of 5 stars. Smack dab in the middle of Little Toyko, the interior of Soba-ya does impress. It's decent sized for an East Village haunt, with a classy interior - filled with a Japanese clientelle (and not the tourist crowd.) FULL REVIEW

One of the few places that still hand-roll and hand-cut their soba noodles–the other is Honmura An–Sobaya is one of my lunch staples. Whether I order a hot bowl of soba or a cold one, I always pick the one with nameko mushrooms. The one with the yam is also good. If you have a large appetite, one of their lunch boxes is an excellent choice. FULL REVIEW

Promise, the last Japanese food I'd have in my remaining days at NYC. My friend (who is Japanese btw, maybe that's why...^^;;) highly recommend this place so I have to try, even though I'm not a fan of soba. The soba are very good indeed, the best I've had, I'm very impressed. It's $12 for a noodle bowl, more than I thought. There were 2 very confused 'gaijin' next to me. After a long studying of the menu, they ordered 'shu-mai' and sushi rolls. FULL REVIEW
The Heavenly Japanese Sweet Potato

The Japanese sweet potato, which is harvested in fall, always fills me with indescribable delight. Sweeter than the American version, it has red skin and delicious yellow flesh. When I was in Tokyo, I used to gorge on cubes of fresh sweet potato fudge, but I also like the potato as it was prepared this evening at Soba Ya: steamed and sliced thickly, sprinkled with crunchy black sesame seeds and drizzled with sugar syrup. Went back to Soba Ya again to try out the fresh Soba noodles and a few other interesting dishes. Soba, if you don’t know is a thin buckwheat noodle that can be served cold or hot in a broth. Here at Soba Ya Japanese restaurant, the soba noodles are hand made and are very fresh and tasty. FULL REVIEW

Went to Soba ya for brunch. It is in the heart of east village on nine street just off of St marks and on weekends this Homey Soba shop is fill with east village hipsters… mostly Asian kids : ) FULL REVIEW
