Patsy's in East Harlem: Balance, Perfection

The sixth slice is as good as the first. Yes, I just said 'sixth.' I would like to piggyback off of the Real Slim Shady's recent comments on America's Favorite Pizza Weblog and take it one step further with respect to his top two NYC pizzerias. I recently visited both Di Fara and Patsy's within 24 hours of each other, and my memories of both are still fresh in my mind. When Patsy's of East Harlem is "on," as AK likes to say, they are not only number one in New York, there is some serious distance between them and Di Fara, and I'll tell you why: balance. Finally! Isn't this, at least according to some, where this whole pizza debate began? With a coal oven at Patsy's in Harlem, circa 1933? 2 years plus in NYC and I hadn't tried Patsy's until this past week. Given my recent tastes of Lombardi's, Grimaldi's, and more, it had to be done. Of course only now do I realize I worked a year not so far from this location, geez, could have been a detriment to my lunchtime health had I known. We arrived around 6:30, and the place went from empty to slammed in a manner of minutes. Definitely felt the college student vibe. Not a lot to... FULL REVIEW

Hope you're thoroughly glutted on leftover turkey sandwiches at the moment. Quick question, I was thinking of finally hitting Patsy's this weekend and was wondering if it's worth the trip to the original up in Harlem? When I reviewed Kebap G the other day, I neglected to mention that it was the SECOND meal of the day – indeed, the second lunchtime meal of the day. What gives? I’m not usually prone to noshing my way through a neighborhood, but the Kebap G visit was at least partially necessitated by the unbearable lightness of the day’s first feast: Patsy’s, the original 1933 coal-oven pizzeria that must be one of the last remnants of the old Italian East Harlem. This one is from Sing but I’ve been to this pizzeria and it rocks. Since it seems like there is a Ray’s pizzeria and a deli on every corner that serves pizza in Manhattan it’s hard to really decide on the best pizza.
