Gotham Bar and Grill is the ultramarathon runner of the New York food scene, motoring ahead with its long-running executive chef, and a menu that makes it one of the best restaurants in town...still.

So, in all the time I lived in New York, I never really took advantage of the Union Square farmers' market. Seasonal wasn't in my vocabulary before I moved to California, and vegetables weren't (and still aren't quite) my thing anyway, but now I appreciate so much more the things you can find.
Now that I pay a lot more attention to my food and where it comes from, to the incredible variety of

A friend and I were discussing the Strip House the other day when he said, "If I wanted to have a nice steak in the neighborhood, I would much rather go across the street to Gotham Bar and Grill." I'm a fan of the Strip House, but I could see his point. Gotham Bar and Grill, once famous as the instigator of the towering-food trend, has once again become a favorite in the Village, thanks to Alfred Portale's critical acclaim and the efforts of sociable sommelier Michael Greenly, who has recruited a wealthy young clientele to the place. The still-chic restaurant has a pedigree on par with Union Square Cafe and Gramercy Tavern, but because...

The total ultimate 14 year old experience, going to Gotham and Grill for your birthday. Truly can't beat that. Bonus part is that we all came along for the meal. I have eaten at the Gotham Bar, at the bar...

A couple of weeks ago Wife informed me that we were invited to the opening party for InTent restaurant by a friend of hers that works for their PR firm. I had been looking forward to eating there and reporting my feelings on it for a while, but that visit did not exactly fit the bill. Those parties are fun but they are distractingly social, and although you have the chance to sample food there is too much going on to assess it properly or fairly. At the end of the party I left very well entertained, appreciative, and interested in returning but had learned little more than a couple of things about the place:

Asam has recently arrived from London, and Bear’s divine inspiration for a truly authentic New York place to take him, before the standard Luger’s, Katz’s and so on was Gotham. Makes sense. Gotham was instrumental at shaping and definitely excels at that part of American cuisine most clearly born of the New York of our life times – her products, her history, her use of an open loft-like interior, and her love of towering structures.

Here's what you can get at Gotham Bar and Grill, Alfred Portale's classic Michelin-starred New York institution, for lunch at only $24.07 (Monday-Friday): To start: a daily soup (this was cauliflower cream with seared scallops).

Gotham Bar and Grill has been around in a hood where there was NOTHING in 1984. There was nothing in 1990 either when JP used to work there. Kudos to you GB for stickin' it out!

If it were 1986 and Patrick Bateman needed to find a place to celebrate a pal advancing to director at his bank, he would open his copy of the Zagat restaurant guide and find Gotham on 12th Street. Once there, he would be reassured looking around the room with its tables of six to eight guys in varying versions of a French-blue shirt with suspenders and red ties, eating food artistically stacked into towers, and drinking wines with labels you would know from a distance. The American Psycho would be comforted by the fact that most every table in the place was a good one, so no guy from another bank could look and say, “look at Bateman, sitting right next to the kitchen.” He could enjoy bumping into all of his friends who crossed the barrier to downtown to try new places like this and Union Square Café. He could bask in the din of power people loudly discussing power things at Gotham and after dinner, pop over to Nell’s to party all night and murder on his way home.

I paid my first visit to this iconic New York restaurant back in November 2004. You could eat for a month at restaurants helmed by chefs who trained under Gotham’s Alfred Portale. After twenty years, Portale still delivers one of the most satisfying dining experiences you can have in this city. On a Wednesday night, Gotham was packed.

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a summer associate at Chadbourne & Park, a law firm in Rock Center. That was the summer I discovered fine dining. Every night we were taken out for drinks and dinner at some impossible to get into restaurant. I was basically enrolled in a playground for twenty-somethings who happened to be in law school. One afternoon, the partner I was working for took a small group of us out to lunch. He didn’t tell us where we were headed but when the town cars hit 12th Street, I knew. He was taking us to Gotham.
