It’s freezing outside. You just got out of jury duty for the next five years, and you only have 5 bucks? No problem, it’s time to celebrate! Walk a couple of blocks over into Chinatown until your ass is completely frozen. It’s better that way because the hot noodle soup that you’re going to eat is going to melt your buns and make you feel happy. Seriously. I don’t know if it was MSG or the blood liquefying again in my veins, but I felt a tingling rush as I drank in the broth at Super Taste Restaurant (26 N. Eldridge St.).

In hindsight, I think it must have been all the questions we were asking that gave us away, because it was clear that, in the mind of the woman behind Super Taste Restaurant’s counter, we had transformed from regular diners to people who paid careful attention to what we put in our mouths. “You go! Come back. One hour! Everything fresh in one hour,” she snapped as she handed us back our change. “But,” I spluttered, “we just paid. You’ll remember us?” She laughed, smiled and said, “Yes. I remember. Now you go away. Come back one hour, OK?” In the back, a man rolling out a sheet of dough the size of a Monopoly board nodded at us. So of course we did as we were told, because if there is one lesson we’ve learned over the course of nearly a decade of adventurous chowing, it is that commands like this one ought to be obeyed, and most especially where noodles are concerned.

So Sietsema turned me onto this place, and Trillin turned him onto it, and I, in turn, pass the buck to you my friends. Which means you only need a few more bucks to feast on a world class bowl of hand-pulled noodles.

Coming back after a few reviews of places that are out of my grasp both financially and longitudinally, Sietsema graced us last week with a review of Super Taste Restaurant on Eldridge St. – his column suggests that the noodles might be the best you’ll have in your life. Not sure I’ve been alive long enough to formulate an opinion of that nature, but I was certainly going to check the place out. Having done so, I feel comfortable predicting Super Taste’s inclusion on Sietsema’s 2006 Cheap List, should he produce one in a format similar to this year’s.
