Off the main strip of Korean Town, Han Bat Han-Batis cheaper than the restaurants on 32nd Street. We had the Bulgolgi (thinly sliced Korean BBQ beef), Soon Doo Boo Chi Gae (tofu casserole with seafood), and Ojinguh Bokum (sauteed squid and vegetables with noodles in a spicy sauce). Everything was decent but I would still pay a little more to eat at Seoul Garden or Chung Moo Ro. The side dishes were also just ok and they gave a bit less in variety. Lon was also grossed out by the sticky floors. FULL REVIEW

Right next to Cho Dang Gol (where my sister and I went based on Winnie’s recommendation list), is this cheaper and equally as good Korean restaurant. Everything on the menu was probably $5 cheaper than its neighbor and what we ordered was solidly good. I had the Gonbal Bibimbap (or stone pot bibimbap, $11), and it was even a little better than I am used to; the meat tasted like bulgoki meat, which is not what I remember from the last time I had it somewhere. Eunice had the Kimchi Chi Gae, which was tasty as well. We also ordered the Korean version of hash browns as a shared appetizer, which was oily in a delicious, deep-fried way. I forget what it’s called, but it was good. The little dishes that came before the meal were maybe not as varied as Cho Dang Gol, being entirely spicy, but I was okay with that. I will definitely consider going here again as a good staple in K-town! FULL REVIEW

Elementary Korean: Han Bat

Great Korean food is one of those hidden gems of New York: everyone has a favorite Chinese place in Chinatown, or a local Thai restaurant in their neighborhood that they think is head and shoulders above the rest, yet few Gothamites seem to seek out good Korean food, which is a shame, given the variety and often exceptional quality of such restaurants in New York. Han Bat, on 35th between 5th and 6th Avenues, is one of these places, nestled into a relatively uncrowded street on the northern edge of Manhattan’s miniature Koreatown. Han Bat also carries great personal meaning for Nosher and me, because it was the first restaurant we visited on moving to New York from London– on our approach into JFK, Nosher leaned in to me and said he really wanted Korean food, and so we dropped our luggage off and headed over to the East 30s to scour the area for prospects, only accidentally turning onto 35th Street where we discovered Han Bat. Last Friday, a friend of mine and I went to 34th Street, Manhattan to go shopping. Coincidentally, I was to meet Robyn, a fellow food blogger and two of her friends. Well, after I was done “shopping” (I refuse to pay $40 for a shirt!), I waited in front of Han Bat, a Korean restaurant. FULL REVIEW

That's not true at all. Of course, I did finish the meal, or stop eating it so I could waddle out of the restaurant and spend the night walking it off, but for a while it seemed neverending. FULL REVIEW

Hanbat

If you tell any New Yorker Korean that you like Hanbat, they’ll say, “Oh, that’s peasant food,” because the vegetables at Hanbat are traditionally from the mountains of Korea. I love the bibimbap here, which is a large bowl of rice full of different kinds of root vegetables and shredded beef. Put a little hot sauce and mix it with a big spoon and you’re set for the day. And as for every Korean sit-down meal, your order comes with several side dishes, pan jan, including really good kimchi. FULL REVIEW
