Had lunch with an old friend and former colleague, after what seemed like ages, the other day. I chose BnC because it was close to his office and because I was curious about this joint from all the mixed reviews I'd read. And after just 45 minutes, I understand why the reviews have been mixed. The burgers came out in a decent enough time, but they were simply not memorable. Nothing about them was out of the ordinary or even particularly good. I ordered mine with cheddar cheese and bacon. It was overcooked. More medium+ than the medium rare I requested. The fries were okay, though my friend didn't get his for a good five minutes after...

This Juicy Burger Would Make Whimpy Proud Greetings Foodies! Your able epicurean is away this week on a west coast food tour (yes, Chez Panisse and French Laundry reviews to come)… but I wanted to pass along this review to tide you over! Is NYC’s tastiest burger in the armpit of midtown? It just may be. Last week, I made my first visit to Burgers and Cupcakes, the silly idea of a restaurant on 9th Avenue, between 35th and 36th. It was crowded at lunch, but I managed to find a table and grab a menu. The seating is simple… find a table, tell the lady what you want,… and she brings it. The place is smallish as you might expect…...

I stumbled upon this Burgers & Cupcakes offshoot on 37th & 9th walking down to Chelsea Market with Daniel one day. Yes, we are true New Yorkers- we walk everywhere. Their burgers looked really good, but I just had myself a slice of pizza just a few blocks ago. We went in because they had a deal: 3 mini cupcakes for $5! I didn’t even have to drag Daniel and we were already inside.

you never would have guessed as much, judging by his former storefront on 9th Avenue, just west of Penn Station. The old interior looked more like a neglected bodega than a cafe, and consequently, business at London’s retail outlet never seemed to be very good. Then, just a few weeks ago, the shop reopened itself as Burgers & Cupcakes, with attractive and appealing seating, not to mention a counter display showcasing stacks and stacks of seductive-looking cupcakes. Now finally the storefront suggests that good things might be found inside

The cult-like success of burger joints like, well, Burger Joint and Shake Shack in Manhattan — and of In-n-Out in the Los Angeles area — has clearly set off a burger bandwagon of sorts. And so we have new entries in the increasingly crowded field of burgers that are intended to be a cut above usual fast-food fare, that can be ordered with quasi-gourmet accouterments, and that often come in retro trappings. This past week I sampled two additions to the burger scene.

A million pounds heavier, food blogger meet-up and a food hunt
Yesterday I went to my pediatrician's office (yeah, yeah, I'm 20) for a checkup in order to get my study abroad medical forms filled out. As I'm not fond of most medical practitioners, I hadn't been there in three years since the last time I had to go was to get into college. During that period I was at my skinniest (not that I was actually "skinny") post-puberty, while right now as my bum exerts pressure on this padded seat, I'm at my highest weight...ever.

You'll think you've died and gone to heaven at Burgers & Cupcakes if only it weren't in Hell's Kitchen with a window view of Lincoln Tunnel traffic. This simple, but perky cafeteria-style luncheonette with pink & brown painted walls invites you to rediscover your inner child, bringing you back to a time of blissful naivete when calories and carbs didn't matter. I took the leap of faith, making the trek to Mitchell London's (of catering fame) newest Ninth Avenue eatery where he cleverly pairs burgers & cupcakes, all but resolving the universal conflict between men and women negotiating over where the hell to eat.

Burgers (& cupcakes from somewhere else) and a cheesy sandwich from 'wichcraft
I think it's close enough. The pink-orange-brown color palette works pretty well though, don't you think? Does it make your stomach churn with meat-digesting powers? IS YOUR BELLY SEETHING? If so, you might want to get that checked out.
