The results of the Cupcake Poll are in: Billy's and Magnolia have tied for their respective tasty perfection, leaving the butter-cream, all-bark-no-bite disappointment of Cupcake Cafe and its ilk behind. A slice of old-fashioned goodness. On the eve of 2004, before the cupcake craze had really spun everyone's sugar tops, a near replica of Cupcake Central (that would be Magnolia Bakery, if there was any doubt or if you've been detoxing under a rock) opened in Chelsea: Billy's Bakery. Indeed, opened by a Magnolia alum, the style and menu are nearly identical, but there’s one thing Billy’s doesn’t have: lines around the block. FULL REVIEW

Here's a cupcake for your Easter weekend. I worked Oscar night with a few other lucky souls, and one of them brought in cupcakes for us. It's a good thing because I needed a serious sugar boost at three o'clock in the morning. When I asked my co-worker where the pastel-frosted masses were from, she said with gusto, "Billy's!" "Billy's? Wow! I've never heard of it," I responded. "Are you serious?" she asked with her neck jutting out incredulously. "Yes?" I answered sheepishly. I went to visit Katie Holme’s favorite cupcake shop! Billy’s is usually really out of the way for me since I live and play in the East Village and LES area. The only time I get to come to this neck of the woods is when I go to Chelsea Market, and after Chelsea Market, I’m usually too stuffed to go anywhere else. This time, it just so happened that I was coming from the opposite direction towards Chelsea, so I finally had an opportunity to sample their infamous cupcakes. FULL REVIEW

I just attempted to toss an empty box of Pocky (or rather, an empty box of air where Pocky had once existed) into the trash bin about 3 feet away from my seat. For the second it was airborne, its direction cruelly shifted from "straight into the trash bin" into "floor space slightly left of the trash bin". My failure in aiming was noted by the box making a sad "kadonk" sound. Note for future trash tossing: must account for the windshift that exists in that small space between my seat and the trash bin. Omai, Where are We Eating? + Baked Fabulosity at Billy's Bakery

There are nights where you plan out your evening meticulously---dinner at 6, show at 8, group sex at 11--and nights where you don't. Last night was a night we didn't. Lisa came over at 7 and we began to stroll. It was quite lovely out and our goal was a place with outdoor seating. Rafaella came to mind but Lisa felt, despite the outside seating, it wasn't quite worth the expense. We were on 23rd Street and suddenly a light bulb went on over my head: "Hey!" I said.
