Last of our NY dinner is at another celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's restaurant Spice Market, it's fusion East/Southeast Asian street food repackaged, re-present with $$ price. The menu has a bit of 'It's a small World' parade feel. We only ordered from the appertizers menu, which sounds more interesting and creative. who'd want to order $20 Thai Green Curry? Everything is shared among three people.

We heard lots of varied reviews about this place - 'too cool for school', 'overpriced food and too much attitude', 'best date ever...' yadda yadda. But hey, we're here to cut through the noise and bring you The Truth. The verdict - this is a cool, 2-floor number with great energy, good design, and pretty damn good food. It has a very exotic feel without trying too hard- teak pagodas, long, snaking bar upstairs, sexy lighting and a great staircase right in the middle of the room. Cheap? No. At least not for 'Asian Street Food' as they describe the menu. But who ever comes to nyc to save money?! Eat at a real street cart if that's what you're after!

You walk into Spice market and you immediately think, This place is massive! The place is beautifully decorated, if not a little too dark, and utilizes a lot of wood instead of glass like 66, another Jean-Georges restaurant. Spice Market is bustling. There are staff members constantly running around. Some of them in backless salmon-colored pantsuits and tunics, some in short mini-skirts. The less attractive ones, I noticed, were wearing black sweaters and jeans. Our table was for 8pm and the place was already hoppin’ by the time we got there. The constant traffic is a little disorienting but I do not expect less from a restaurant in the Meatpacking District. In this neighborhood, you go to party, not to eat.

I used to be a habitué of Manhattan's Meatpacking District. In fifth grade, forty-five years ago, we were bundled off to see butchers at work. In time, meatpackers became meat markets, as our economy has sunk from production to consumption, beef to beefcake. Today those fragrant warehouses are haunts with handsome filles, not filled with handsome haunches. (Shoot me now.)

A Scary, Posh, Sporty, Gingery Lunch at Spice Market, Baby
I love manipulating my parents. Originally, we were going to dine uptown at Fresco's for lunch. "Maybe we'll see Katy Couric again," said my dad eagerly. Since I knew celebrities were the draw, and since I was less than impressed on our last outing to Fresco's I said: "You'll see twice the celebrities at Spice Market. It's the hottest spot in New York."

Last weekend, Marty and I joined some friends at the Meatpacking District hotspot, Spice Market. It opened in February as a joint effort from two of New York’s top chefs Gray Kunz (Lespinasse, future Time Warner Center restaurant - Café Gray) and Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Jean-Georges, Vong, 66, V Steakhouse, Mercer Kitchen, JoJo, Nougatine). The gorgeous restaurant decked out with an array of Asian antiques, flowing fabrics, soft-glowing light is Kunz and Vongerichten’s tribute to Asian street food. My curiosity over this uber-sexy hotspot was balanced with fears of another over-hyped, over-priced New York restaurant. It received what should have been a culinary seal of approval in the form of three stars from then interim New York Times restaurant critic, Amanda Hesser.

I had to try the Spice Market. It was being reigned as the new hot restaurant in town. So many people I know have been. I had to go and make my own assessment.

Okay. I know it's shocking. How could I dislike the hottest new restaurant in New York? Well, I did. And, all of you will just have to deal with it. (Feel free to post in opposition below.)

I have been to Spice Market three times this week. Need I say more? Well, yes. The fact that two of the most talented chefs of our time are working in the same restaurant (Jean Georges Vongerichten and Gray Kunz) and are both actually there every night, cooking (and mingling with the A-List crowds), is pretty exciting to me. Honestly, seeing Gray Kunz back behind the line was a huge culinary turn on. And that JGV, he is so charming and cute! And then I tasted the food. Who needs sex? Just eat here.
