FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH is a great day for Ukrainian food, that's what I always say. And if you don't like being out and about on such a day, you're in luck--Veselka is open 24 hours, so if you're craving pirogies stop by as late as you like, as close to Saturday the Fourteenth as you can get. Since Mint was cat-sitting in the East Village after work, we decided to meet up late and satisfy our own pirogi cravings. The selection at Veleska is always amazing: potato, cheese, sauerkraut, sweet potato, spinach, and mushroom--in some combination or the other--are always...

Our first food stop in NYC was one of Alexis' favorite brunch spots, Veselka. It was just as good as she remembered. Meat Combo Platter $13 Kielbasa, Stuffed Cabbage in Mushroom Cream Sauce and perogies. Everything was good and meaty. This meal was also served with the soup and salad shown below. Red Pepper and Spinach Soup Sounded better than it actually was. Side Salad with Dill Dressing A very satisfying little side salad. Beets and Saurkraut Served with the meat platter. Hunter's Stew $12 This hearty stew of sourkraut, pork and kielbasa was very filling, especially since it came with everything you see below. Potato...

right down the street from my apartment is this nifty ukrainian 24-hr diner. i’d been there once before, mid-afternoon and tried my first pierogies. (i thought they were pretty good, but steph found them lacking.) cynthia and i stopped there last night, late, after the beautiful production of madama butterfly. we each got a cup of soup (hers, vegetarian borscht: “tastes like beets and sauerkraut”; mine, chicken noodle soup: great for colds, very homemade-delicious!). and we split the fruit and cheese plate. the soups came in at $3.25 (cup) and the plate was a tad pricey ($9.25), but at least had a good selection of fruit to accompany the ricotta-like cheese. i think i’ll come back to try some of their actual entrees - they sound meaty and interesting! also, i would recommend this as a great 24-hr non-bar diner spot in my area.

My roommate enjoyed her pierogies and the Ukrainian meatballs I ordered were delicious, but I have to admit I was given pause by their having arrived at my doorstep in a plastic bag labelled St Mark's Veterinary Hospital. Please, for the love of tasty meats and familiar beasts, never ever do that again.

With lunch and dinner all stuck in office, the only chance to eat out is...breakfast. Sacrifice a little sleep, get up early. :D Eating breakfast at neighborhood cafe with friends is what I considered a good life. This Ukranian 24 hour diner Veselka is a popular spot at East Village. I met up with my coworker and her friends for breakfast.

I'm mega-tired, but I found that if I don't update this site frequently, I start forgetting EVERYTHING THAT EVER HAPPENS IN MY LIFE. Everything. My memory is kind of...on the lower end of "craptastic".

Yesterday I ate lunch at Ukranian restaurant Veselka with my friend Joan and her brother Ronald who were visiting for a while from Maryland. Ronald had heard of the place and since the weather was craptastic and we didn't know where to eat, we popped in. Very nice place and for $10 the vegetarian platter is a great deal. I was full (yes, FULL, that happens sometimes) from the split pea soup, salad, four perogies, and stuffed cabbage. I've never had perogies before (or Ukranian food) and as a dumpling lover, of course I'd like perogies. I like the cheese ones more than the potato ones, since the cheese ones had a touch of sweetness to them.
