BabyCakes NYC, Gotham’s vegan cupcakery, has already relocated its West Hollywood digs even before it’s moved in. Now instead of sitting on the corner of Spaulding and Beverly, the store will open up four blocks east on Gardner and Beverly, alongside high-end denim designer, Earnest Sewn, in the renovated Tire Town [...]

A hung jury. Sugarless cupcakes rank right up there with your best friend’s boyfriend, whom you know you’re supposed to like, and you really want to like, and you like in theory because he’s your best friend’s boyfriend, but… there’s something there you can’t completely embrace. And yet you do. As my sugar-high crashes are getting more intense, and I’m trying to be more conscious of what I eat and where my food comes from, a bakery like BabyCakes is genius. It has all the sweet charm of an old-fashioned bakery (a cozy window seat, retro signs claiming “Quality our motto. Courtesy our hobby.” and seersucker candy-striper dresses as...

"We should take the B or D to Grand Street. Because...um, I want an egg custard tart." After spending a few hours at the Brooklyn Museum last Saturday, Jason, Joana and I emerged in various states of lethargy and tried to decide the best way to get back into Manhattan to visit Babycakes for the sake of Joana's gentle tummy. Although I can eat just about anything without too much bodily harm (until I ultimately get diabetes), I enjoy the "not as guilt inducing" sugar/wheat/gluten free treat from Babycakes every now and then. But first, I craved...egg custard tart.

A small (non-asian) bakery, located on the northern edge of Chinatown. An unassuming shoppe (with almost no signage), Babycakes specializes in healthy sweets, made with no wheat, gluten, eggs, dairy or even refined/artificial sugars. It's like Magnolia, done vegan style - offering snacks such as chocolate cake, cupcakes, gingerbread and cookies. Though somewhat expensive--averaging $3.00 per piece--the snacks are tasty. (The banana bread was particularly nice - with a sweet, moist texture.) Great for a change of pace - for those times when Taipan Bakery just doesn't get the job done!

Belated bday dinner at Casanis for an always late girl + late night cupcakes from Babycakes
I didn’t get to see my bestest last week when she went out to celebrate her birthday because I had to stay in the city for errands. She got kidnapped and brought to Jersey for some shopping and gambling fun. We decided I’d take her out to dinner yesterday. Originally, I thought Gramercy Tavern would be a nice treat for both of us, but given the amount of heat and that it started to rain just as we were heading out, we decided to shoot for something close.

Pizza: it's the college student's staple. You can eat it for dinner! Or lunch! OR BREAKFAST! You can even brush your teeth with it! Despite the many uses of pizza, which may or may not be life sustaining, I rarely eat it. I grew up eating pizza, no question, but that was the school "pizza day" stuff. Flaccid, dripping in yellow oil and heavy with cheese, I easily gobbled up two slices (even when I was in elementary school, oh my), but I wouldn't be very drawn to that kind of pizza now. (Actually, there's this place near my house called Brick Oven Pizza that I used to go to a lot with my family since it was pretty good. I haven't been there in years, but I'd be interested in trying it again.)

This morning while leaving my dorm, I noticed a row of open boxes of Dunkin' Donuts on the front desk. The attendant called out to us early risers,

As promised, I stopped by Babycakes on Broome Street on Saturday afternoon. This new arrival to the cupcake community is unique because they serve sugar free, gluten free organic cupcakes. I talked to the owner, Erin McKenna, and she told me about spelt. Spelt is an Asian wheat that she uses in some of her cupcakes. Babycakes cupcakes are kinda pricey at $3.25 for a small. (See picture above) I enjoyed the lemon cupcake with ginger lemonade. In fact, I could have had a frosting shot for a buck, but I was feeling so healthy after eating the cupacake that I didn't want to ruin it.

Aw! A cupcake mosaic on the front stoop of that spanking-new Lower East Side bakery! Adorable. Oh! The pretty shopgirls all wear obscenely cute candy-striped pink pinafores. Sweet!
