danube at 30 hudson street in tribeca is the second in the restaurant trifecta of chef david bouley. in the michelin guide of 2006 it had 2 michelin stars, in the new 2007 guide it had been demoted to 1 michelin star. ouch ! well, it must have been the food because danube is a gorgeous restaurant. it’s klimt meets hollywood circa 1905 vienna. this jewel-like restaurant with glazed enamelled walls is set in a triangular shaped space with the bar/lounge in the front tip of the triangle. it has very high ceilings with black lacquered columns on the edges and i feel like i’m entering a giant beaux arts wedge of austrian cheese. first, the lounge…

I visited Danube for the second time last night. (An account of my first visit is here.) It remains a wonderful restaurant for a special occasion. The Klimmt-inspired décor is a gem, although it occurred to me that curtains in the main dining room would be an improvement. It almost spoils the atmosphere to look out the windows and see gloomy Hudson Street outside.

Last night, I had a wonderful dinner at Danube. A vendor was buying, and he asked if I had a favorite. I approach my restaurant life a little differently. An invitation to dinner is opportunity to try someplace I’ve never been. Danube came immediately to mind.
