The past Monday, my friend Dave wanted to celebrate his birthday early since he’s going down south to Florida during the actual time, so being a good friend I ate lunch with him at Asiate. Everything is so…pretty and elegant. The views of Central Park and midtown Manhattan is pretty awesome as well.

Went to Asiate for lunch today. The space is awesome. Anyone not impressed needs a reality check. From the Chihuly glass sculpture (think swans on a tuft of grass) as you walk off the elevator on the 35th floor to the panoramic views from the lounge and main dining room = it's breathtaking. And a little knee knocking. I'm fairly certain my sense of balance was skewed (very, very minimally, but enough to slightly feel it) from high winds and being so high up. The service was fantastic. The hostess was remarkably pleasant and after not taking up the offer to check my coat, she responded "As you wish. We are here to make your visit a comfortable one" or something like that - not at all pretentious.

A friend had asked where I’d like to be taken out for my birthday. I chose Asiate, where we dined on a wonderful Saturday evening in late November. This must be the most spectacular room in New York City, particularly at night. At one end of the room is a massive wall of wine bottles; on the ceiling, a glass tree-branch scuplture. Most striking are the wraparound windows offering unobstructed long-distance views of the skyline. On a clear evening, as it was last Saturday, we felt like we were suspended in space, looking out on a futuristic fantasy city.

Yesterday was my birthday. On this day, and on one of my best pal's in life's bday, we take each other out for lunch or a massage, or a shop or whatever. So, yesterday we did a real "ladies who lunch" lunch at the Asiate restaurant that sits at the top of the Mandarin Hotel in Columbus Circle.

I lunched at Asiate this week…wait, I just want to interject here and say that I love using nouns as verbs…as in “I summered in Bora Bora,” “Darling, yesterday I lunched in Milan,” or “Of course I would only winter in Aspen.” You know, it must be so nice to be able to use nouns as verbs on a regular basis, but alas, it is so very not my life. Nonetheless, it is fun to pretend to be a noun-verber here in this virtual world of my blog. So, anyway, as I was saying, I lunched at Asiate this week. Asiate is chef Noriyuki Sugi’s elegant, white-washed restaurant at the newly opened Mandarin Oriental Hotel, just next to the Time Warner Mall. My friend Jackie was visiting from London and wanted to have lunch somewhere fabulous. Asiate was an easy pick, especially because I have been trying to get in at night and cannot seem to snag a table. (Apparently I am not as important as I’d like to think I am). Lunch was the perfect choice. We were there on a bright, crisp day, and were seated promptly at a roomy four top in the center of the dining room (next to Jerry Stiller).
