I apologize for not writing for a while, even though you see the photos from my Flickr photostream on my sidebar and the page itself, it’s just because I’m busy with work, studying for LSATs, and now my family is going through a rough time because my mother’s seriously ill. I’m just writing to you [...]

Food tour for non-diabetics: Jacques Torres, Levain, Billy's, La Bergamote, and Chelsea Market
I just attempted to toss an empty box of Pocky (or rather, an empty box of air where Pocky had once existed) into the trash bin about 3 feet away from my seat. For the second it was airborne, its direction cruelly shifted from "straight into the trash bin" into "floor space slightly left of the trash bin". My failure in aiming was noted by the box making a sad "kadonk" sound. Note for future trash tossing: must account for the windshift that exists in that small space between my seat and the trash bin.

A million pounds heavier, food blogger meet-up and a food hunt
Yesterday I went to my pediatrician's office (yeah, yeah, I'm 20) for a checkup in order to get my study abroad medical forms filled out. As I'm not fond of most medical practitioners, I hadn't been there in three years since the last time I had to go was to get into college. During that period I was at my skinniest (not that I was actually "skinny") post-puberty, while right now as my bum exerts pressure on this padded seat, I'm at my highest weight...ever.

You're So Levain (The City's Best Chocolate Chip Cookie at Levain Bakery)
There are certain bloggers who are known for getting the scoop. They break big news stories, create political scandals, get interviewed on CNN. And then there's me: Mr. Laggy. Let me be known as the blogger, specifically the food blogger, who comes very late to whatever phenomenon is at issue. In this case the phenomenon is The Levain Bakery and the cookies sold there.

Gather round. This is the story of the chocolate chip-walnut cookie from Levain Bakery. First of all it must be said that while Levain Bakery is a whole in the wall that is no excuse for native New Yorkers to know nothing about it. I was eating at the Pop over cafe on the Upper West side when it immediately occured to me that we were within blocks of the Levain Bakery..not that I had ever been, but I knew it was in this region. So I did what any logical person would do in my position, find the Levain Bakery.

This is a continuation of Part 1. Of course, you need a first part before you have the second part. An exception is dessert, which you would normally eat after the first part (ie, something that isn’t dessert), but is perfectly okay to eat as the first and second part, and possibly a third part. Really! I don’t make these things up. However, you may want to consult your physician before heeding my words.

Pillows. Water balloons. Silly Putty. Guinea pigs. Myself. These things may seem incongruous when in fact they are all bonded by the characteristic of being squishy.

It wasn't until much later that I ate the chocolate chip cookie from Levain. (See - I do have self-control.) In my book, if the cookie costs 3 bucks, it better be great. This one didn't disappoint. It was a heavy cookie. It was a thick cookie. The damn thing was at least an inch thick and chock full of chips. When I took it out of the brown bag, it had telltale grease spots, plenty of butter and/or shortening was used. The cookie was soft in the middle, but crunchy on the outside. It entertained me with its flavors as I waited for the intermission of my friend's play to end. I forgot to add that there were nuts in the cookie. I'm usually not a fan of nuts in cookies, but the walnuts added a wonderful third dimension of taste and texture. My nutty friend Sara is in a benefit performance of "The Vagina Monologues." At the performances they sell chocolate vagina lollipops. I'm glad I ate the cookie because I'm not so in touch with milk chocolate vaginas to be licking one on a stick. I prefer dark chocolate. But if you want one go to www.vaginavlog.com or go to the play on Tuesday, all proceeds go to a nonprofit women's group.

Today I visited my buddy Brittany on the Upper West Side. Britt is going places quickly - she will soon be a famous foodinista. The book she recipe-tested and hand modeled in France, "The Good Cook" by Anne Willan is out in bookstores now. Check it out, it's really great. We had brunch at an average brunch/tapas spot. Nothing to write home about, but the roasted potatoes were pretty good. I needed a little something sweet to end our time together so Britt took me over to Levain. Levain, which is French for yeast,is known for its bread. Britt said the raisin walnut ($5.50) is awesome. I'll have to take her word for it because I was more interested in their humongous cookies and the baked jelly doughnut ($2). I got both, but I ate the doughnut first. Britt warned me that a lot of people don't like it, but she digs it. She said it reminded her of a brioche without the butter or eggs. I can understand why some folks wouldn't like it. It is indeed doughy, but in a sourdoughy kind of way. The dough has a tartness of flavor that is unexpected. I didn't mind it, but I didn't love it and it didn't satiate the buttery sinfulness that I craved.
