eat2love partakes in a twelve course tasting menu on her date with an oenophile/foodie. Can the man who has retired from business at 45 to purchase a vineyard in Napa Valley and eat at the world's finest restaurants win her over?

Check out Off The Broiler's post back in October. Stunning photographs of the dining room and a behind the scenes look into the kitchen.
Eleven Madison Park Winter Restaurant Week '08 The last "nice" lunch I had was at Jean Georges, a place that I believe is arguably the best, most consistent restaurant in New York City. I stand by that statement although it is certainly loose footing when you have restaurants like Eleven Madison Park. I've been to EMP and JG about the same amount of times - perhaps a few more times at JG and only a handful of times while Andrew Humm has been in the kitchen at EMP. But every time, the food is outstanding. For the second consecutive time, we didn't get our corner seat - though we did get (again) the table next to it. So at least they are...

Eleven Madison Park is a place I've been curious to check out for a while. So, I figured why not take the fiancee there for her birthday. Was it worth the wait? I definitely think so. This was by far the best birthday dinner I've taken her to - others were at One If By Land, Babbo, and Sapa. Overall, I give the restaurant a 88/100. My Menu We ordered the gourmand tasting menu which has smaller portions than the 3 and 4 course menus. Since I was so excited that we were eating at Eleven Madison...

Some really pristinely cut fish with ratatouille
I've been meaning to update, but school/career stuff has been more time-consuming than I had budgeted. I am heading to Chicago in around 48 hours for some molecularly gastronomic meals, including Schwa, Moto, and hopefully a seat at Alinea if I can get off the wait list. I am hoping to squeeze in a post before then, but if not, I

For the third dining celebration of my 67th birthday we went to Eleven Madison Park with Ron and June, our first time at this highly-rated restaurant set in what had been the cavernous art deco executive briefing center of The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. A Bittersweet Ending to Restaurant Week: Eleven Madison Park
Lunch at Eleven Madison Park was my last and final restaurant for Restaurant Week on Monday. (For those of you who are still curious when is it over, it’s officially this Friday, July 27, 2007; while some restaurants are extending ’til Labor Day.)

For the sake of being curious, I wanted to try Eleven Madison Park’s tasting menu for lunch. Why? Well, I still have their Restaurant Week certificate (which worth $24.07). It would be interesting to let Chef Daniel Humm strut his stuff for lunch, instead of me picking out what I think tastes good.

Eleven Madison Park Restaurant has made several changes over the past few years: the décor has turned into a somewhat more casual atmosphere and most importantly, the newly appointed chef Daniel Humm. The latter change is the biggest change because first, he is a young chef and he gives the food such an inspiring tastes and textures that I haven't eaten in Eleven Madison Park for years. However with the head pastry chef, Nicole Kaplan gone, the pastry department has taken a downturn. The savory courses outdoes the dessert courses here.

All in all, my 10th visit to Eleven Madison Park (under three different chefs) was terrific. Not sure how they do it, but nearly every time I eat there (especially at lunch) we get the same table...which is terrific, because we *love* the table that we nearly always get.

Tidbits: Les Halles, Eleven Madison Park, Tabla Bread Bar, Sripraphai, Prune
Had lunch yesterday with dad. Service was, I hate to say it, confused. Actually - the hostess was confused. Polite though. Also, I ordered the halibut, but was served the salmon. I was hungry and time was of the essence, so I just kept it. The food was delicious. Dad and I got the same dishes and being that I was in a rush, we stuck to the a la carte menu.

I went to 11 Madison twice during my recent trip - a Tuesday and Saturday. Neither meal was overly impressive but it’s the potential that is even more frustrating. These meals weren’t an improvement over Daniel Humm’s San Francisco tenure at Campton Place but the flashes of brilliance were still there. It sounds like he may have been realizing this potential during the summer when many reviewers on varied online forums could do nothing but rave. However, these meals, while pleasant, were solidly in the second tier of US dining.

new york probably has more restaurants per capita than any place on earth, or at least it seems that way. we certainly have the greatest variety with a melting pot of immigrants from every place on the planet bringing their foods and opening up restaurants. on one block in my neighborhood there is a pizzeria next to a tibetan restaurant across from a sushi restaurant and thai , italian and greek restaurants. manhattan is a foodie playground.

Restaurants can sometimes make me feel a certain way. Some places make me feel cool, or like I might at least be cool for one night. Places like Freeman’s, Five Ninth, and The Spotted Pig. Others make me feel like I’m at home. I’d put Five Points, Tia Pol, and Little Owl in this category. The other night when I had dinner at Eleven Madison Park, I felt something I don’t often feel. I felt like a grown up. How rare. But that’s what happens whenever I dine there, or spend a night at the bar sipping on one of their sophisticated cocktails often garnished with Greenmarket fruit. I feel like a real honest-to-goodness adult. The next day I return to my usual mental state, somewhere in my teens, in my standard daily outfit of cargo pants, a t-shirt and a hoodie. Add braces and a skateboard and I could be a thirteen year-old. But when I pushed through the sturdy old revolving door of Eleven Madison last week, I was transformed into a civilized, put-together, and moderately educated and productive adult. Poof! It was a nice change.

Last week, I turned 37 years old. Not quite mid-life crisis time, but its been a very busy and sometimes difficult year, with my launching of Off The Broiler and my parting of the ways with eGullet. I always go out to dinner on my birthday, but this year I wanted to do something special: Top notch service at a fine restaurant in Manhattan, and a quintessential NYC dining experience in a majestic space.

What better way for The Vamp to ring in year 5767 than to partake in vittles? And why stop at just one stop for said New Year's vittles, when New York City has so many culinary treasures to offer? Well, I figured for my figure's sake I ought to narrow the field down a bit. So last night, in celebration of Rosh Hashanah, I joined a good friend for a wee tour of Danny Meyer's wee Madison Park empire.

When you spend a ridiculous amount of time, energy and money eating at restaurants, you get to know a few of the people who work in the restaurant industry. One such person I have become acquainted with over the years is Chris Russell, currently the General Manager of the Union Square Cafe. I must have met Chris close to 10 years ago when he was a Captain at Gramercy Tavern, and he handled a number of wine dinners that my friends and I had organized at the restauarnt. It was way back in the day when Tom Collicchio was doing the cooking himself, and I recall Tom bounding out of the kitchen on more than one occasion to get himself a pour of some unusual wine that we were drinking. Nowadays Chris has moved up the food chain and is a big shot, and instead of organizing the food for my table, he graciously takes my phone calls when I need a table at USC on short notice. He is the living evidence that on occassion, nice people who are dedicated to their job actually get rewarded in life.

I loved Eleven Madison when it first opened particularly at lunch. The large glass windows allow light to stream in. Huge flower arrangements that took over the airspace just sparkled. Although the room is stark the light created a glow in the room. Also, the food was really good.

Fennel Fantasia New York City Entry #91 Eleven Madison Park
When a restaurant manages to scale the heights of its potential - to discover its G spot - critics must be of two minds. Gone is the opportunity to slip in those cutting bon mots that readers treasure. Great great great makes a tinny sound.

On Tuesday, my Aunt Eileen called me having just come back from their place on Melrose, an exclusive island off of Hilton Head accessible only by boat, and asked to take my wife and me out for dinner. We all have a list, somewhere in our brains, of things we mean to do--of places we want to eat, things we want to cook, people we want to kill. Sometimes we forget what's on those lists so that when mom calls and says, "I'm coming to New York with dad for that cruise we booked" (they're going on a Fall Foliage cruise) "where should we go to lunch?" I really have no idea what to suggest. But then mom says, "Have you heard of 11 Madison Park?" and suddenly the list illuminates in your brain and you say, "Oh yes! That's on my list!" And mom says: "What list?" and she locks you up in an asylum.

Decided to eat at 11 Madison during one of the City's restaurant weeks.I guess the cuisine would be considered French-American..but it's going under fine dining.Friendly hostess sat us at one of the tables in the large dining area...the grandeur of the building makes you feel like you're on the set of the movie "Aviator." Knew I liked the place when the waiter was more than happy to allow us to order off the prix fixe menu and a few things "a la carte."

My friend Kristen and I felt like treating ourselves well last night. Since we didn't have the bank to head to Masa or Per Se, we settled on a perfect glass of wine in a perfect room - Eleven Madison Park. Bypassing the grandeur of the main room's art deco design, we grabbed two seats at the restaurant's wine bar. Taking in the collection of dapper, well-suited gentlemen lined to our left and the striking gold ceiling above, we knew we'd chosen well.
