My husband and I loved Gusto, and he booked us a table for my birthday. We were utterly disappointed. People who did not have reservation got a better table, and the food was not nearly what it was before. My husband ordered their fish - dover sole, and HE turned out to be the catch of the day. While the fish was acceptable, the $39 price tag was not! We now have blacklisted this - as there are way too many excellent restaurants in NYC (all boroughs) for us to put up with this.

Chef Amanda Freitag has officially served her last meal at West Village Italian, Gusto. After representing Gusto at Tuesday evening's traditional "Feast of the Seven Fishes" dinner at James Beard House, Freitag has left to gear up for her new position as the executive chef at The Harrison. Chef Anne Burrell will divide her time between Centro Vinoteca and Gusto. In a game of musical chefs, Larry Baldwin will apparently man Centro's kitchen as the Chef de Cuisine while Burrell pulls double duty at both spots. I don’t know about you all, but lately I feel very overscheduled, like there are just not enough hours in the day or days in the week. I want time to see my family, to hang out with my friends, and with my main man Craig. Then I need time to network, or at least try to make an attempt at some professional socializing. I need to take an hour for the gym. (Like the whites, it’s gotta be done.) I want to take classes. I want to teach classes. I want to volunteer and try to make a difference. And there are days when I just want to lay on my couch and watch a movie and order in sushi, or spend a whole day cooking. But lately, I feel stretched thin, like I need like ten days in my week. Cry me a river, I know, but I imagine that every one of you reading this feels the same way, if not worse, because many of you have a lot more going on than I do. We’re all juggling so many commitments and intentions and promises that there’s really no way to prevent some of those from hitting the floor—KERPLAT! Indeed, sometimes, despite the most genuine of intentions to honor all commitments—family, friends, relationship, gym, work—some of those plans end up on the cutting room floor. FULL REVIEW

My Dinner At Gusto

I was prepared to like Gusto even before I got there. I knew the chef, Jody Williams, from Tappo, a short-lived Mediterranean spot styled in the form of a Tuscan farmhouse, located in the space that is now Hearth. I had some great meals there. Several with the ex-boyfriend, the one whom I now refer to as the eater of souls, the destroyer of hope, and the full blast, high-speed blender for my heart. Anyway, now that I am older and wiser, rather than seeking/deriving joy from romantic relationships and risking going through that ripe hell known as a break up (or was that breakdown) all over again, I tend to derive pleasure from meals shared with my girlfriends—Susie, Jamie, Stacey, Diana, Debbie, Cori, Kiri, Court, and Steven (well, the last two are not girls— they are my guy friends—but they count as girls for these purposes). Once in a while you hit on a new restaurant which exceeds your expectations. If you are really lucky, it is in your neighborhood. My lucky day happened, Gusto Ristorante e Bar Americano, opened in my hood. I have a sneaking suspicion that people will come from all over to eat at Jody Williams new place, not just from the local neighborhood. Too bad for me. FULL REVIEW
