Dumpling houses are a dime a dozen in Chinatown, but these days Deluxe Food Market (79 Elizabeth St.) is my go to place for dumplings. I like Deluxe's dumplings because they use thin wonton wrappers, just like my mom does. Don't they look like flappy brains in the picture? They are filled with pork, green onion, and I suspect a bit of sugar in the mix. Though pork does indeed have its own natural sweetness, so maybe I'm wrong. Of course, I prefer my mom's mandoo because she uses a mix of meats and/or tofu, those tiny noodle threads, bean sprouts, green onions and sometimes carrot. Oh geez, has it really been that long since my last entry? Man - being a student is really killing my energy, as well as my sleep. Nothing can be done about that, I guess; now is the busiest time of year for me. To make matters worse, this is something I had meant to post during the summer! I guess it slipped my mind. Are you the most adventurous carnivore whom you know? Do your friends shake their heads in disbelief when you order the alligator special? Then I'd urge you to check out Chinatown's Deluxe Food Market Inc., where you will be amply rewarded in your search for mystery meats. The narrow, brightly lit shop is filled to the gills with preserved duck necks, salted duck tails, smoked duck feet, fresh squab, dried shrimp sausage and something called "chicken paste". (Your more conservative friends will enjoy the baby back ribs and fresh fish.) Look for the roasted ducks hanging in the window. FULL REVIEW
