I got some really sad news today and needed some Fried Chicken therapy. Of course, I had no cash, so I had to go to the bank. A short walk from said bank, I became mesmerized by the ribs cooking at Sherman's BarBQ (2507 Frederick Douglas Blvd. bw 145th&146th St.). Can you see them in the window? I've always loved the looks of this storefront, but I like my bbq cooked in a smoker and Sherman's aren't smoked. So I've never eaten there. Eating In Translation has a much nicer picture of the exterior in case you're interested. But once I saw the lady behind the counter peek her head out at me, I felt obliged to go inside. How can I eat healthier when my favorite fried chicken shop Charles’ Southern Style Kitchen is now a mere twelve blocks away? And not only there, but Charles is spreading his chicken wings to other spots. He’s lent his name to Slice of Harlem where they have a steam table with comfort food (and pizza!) sold by the pound. And he’s a consultant on the food at Rack and Soul, a bbq and soul food place near Columbia University (Broadway & 109 St). Carol told me about the joint about five years ago during my fried chicken addiction. I had been treating my problem with Mama’s fried chicken on Ave B & 3rd. Mama’s has wonderful mashed potatoes and veggie sides and their portions are huge. It’s a great place to go, but I’ve always thought their fried chicken was lacking in flavor. Not so at Charles.

In that vague gray area between Saturday night and Sunday morn, one of Mr. Munchies drinking buddies up and decides he needs the kind of salvation that can scarcely be found in Gotham. He not only decides to up and leave the city, but to turn into a fannypack-touting tourist beforehand. Even worse, he wants to be the kind of tourist that seeks salvation in strange churches. Mr. Munchies dresses up in his Sunday finest (a plantation suit) and joins him as we make out way to the Abyssinian Baptist Church. Decked out as we are in our finery, we just presume that we can walk in with the rest of the Harlem parishioners. The minister helps us otherwise, pointing to the long line of whiteys that wraps around the block. Heesh, it was easier getting into the ODB CMJ show, into Matmos at the Whitney, into Bonnie Prince Billy at Pete’s Candy Store, into the free Deerhoof/ Beirut show at McCarren Pool.

It’s hard to find the best fried chicken place in Harlem because there are plenty of places you can choose from. I have to admit, I didn’t even give Charlie’s a chance until I saw a New York Times clipping on their window. But if the Times can make it uptown, there was just no reason why I shouldn’t be eating there, too.

Harlem Buffetaissance: Lunch at Charles Southern Kitchen
Meet David and Rebecca. David is an actor whose show "Mama's Knishes" features him in your kitchen, dressed as his great grandmother cooking knishes for you and telling stories from the past. You can read about it on his website, Knish.org. (Check out the praise from The Wall Street Journal--it even has a cartoon of David!) I'm trying to convince him to perform it for me and my classmates. If he does, I promise to tell you all about it.
