Courtesy of shortexact - Last time I went to New York, I remember stepping out of grand central (or was it Penn?) and seeing Starbucks on 3 out of the 4 intersection corners, and it was sort of a sick sight. Are those all still there? Downtown SF has lots of Starbucks, but at least they are 0.75-1 block apart, or so. It gives you a little time to take a deep breath and recharge before having to see another one.

I have hated Starbucks for a long time. They are symbolic of what I hate in the American food industry, a well marketed company with bad to mediocre product making the most money. I can't blame them for trying to be successful but as a true lover of food/beverages, I cringe at the thought of their coffee. Last Tues, Starbucks closed all 7100 stores across the country to re-educate their employees on how to make their drinks. I thought to myself, great, they are going to improve their product and I won't have to suffer during all the casual business meetings held at Starbucks. Starbucks Breakfast: Doomed from the Get Go

A few weeks ago in the New York Times Arts and Leisure section there was a great piece by Susan Dominus on the Starbucks aesthetic embodied in the CDs and DVDs it sells. That aesthetic, according to both Starbucks executives and customers quoted in the story, is built around the notions of community, inspiration, discovery, and, of course, quality. I'm not ashamed to admit that I buy into this aesthetic. I think the CDs on sale at Starbucks are usually good and interestingly chosen. And I am a music freak. Nutting with the Devil

Their medium-bodied roast has consistently good flavor and is always perfectly satisfying (plus, if we must support such a powerful corporate juggernaut, why not at least pick one that makes great donuts?). They signal to the consumer that this is serious business by taking away all the choices that Starbucks is usually known (and mocked) for. It comes in one size (in a espresso-size cup) and there's no low-foam, decaf, no-fat or flavor shots (although that could have some potential, right?). The best thing about this was the texture, kind of chalky, like a high-cocoa-percentage chocolate. It fills your mouth in a really satisfying way. I like my cocoa less sweet, though, in most cases, and it was more milky than the two recipes I've tried at home. FULL REVIEW
